use seachem flourish excel and doze daily.. it helps to activate the growth cell.. for a small tank avoid adding any more fishes.. split the hairgrass to smaller bunches and plant again..

Okie, i'm planning to put not more than 6fishes, should be alright? If i do not use any substances to enchance the growth cell, will the plants still grow by its own ?

Hi Bryant. Plants need a combination of nutrients for it to sustain and flourish. If you are not looking forward to adding suppliments, the minimum you could do is probably to have base fert. But base fert too has a livespan... When these nutrients are being discounted, I believe that ammonia from your fauna would not be enough for the plants' long term survival. Won't be as green and lush as you see in the aquascape thread.

Hairgrass is not exactly the choice plant for beginners, they may not be the most difficult to keep, but they do need alot of backbreaking effort to plant them nicely. I would recommend that you use narrow leaf java fern at the back of the tank. Since it is a 1 footer, you have to consider very carefully your mid and foreground plant carefully.

A lesson I learn on my own is not to use a max of two types of plants to decorate and develop a good green thumb to trim them to the ideal shape. Sadly Gen X is no longer around, back then I never knew how to appreciate a round ball of small leaf tiger lily, that plant alone could make the difference.

Second lesson, if you do use 3 plants or more, you don't need to use all the plants just to justify the cost of buying them. You have to know that the plants will eventually grow up and if there is too many of them, competition will ensue.

Third lesson, buy a good lighting and adjust your nutrient regime according to you tank specification.

lastly, 10 is a good number for faunas for a 1 footer. The reason is both ecological and economics. Most fish and shrimps are sold in packets of 10 to entice people to buy more. Essentially, some camps of thought follow a strict regime of 1 fish per litre, but I take it with a pinch of salt and do not abide to that ruling completely. Nonetheless, less is more, buying less fish is better and buying less species is also better (in this case, 1 is the golden number, excluding the odd oto)

These lessons I learned the hard way and paid dearly (much to LFS delight, I would guess) the loss of fauna and flora just to get it right. Still learning myself and I consider myself very much an amateur, but wouldn't hurt to share my mistakes and lessons I learn along the way.
