last week, I got myself a pair of Apistogramma cacatuoides from C328.
There was only one pair when I got there as the female of the other pair was missing. i presume its dead.. so i took the only pair left... all the way from the moment i caught them from those little tanks to now when these guys are swimming in my tank

... i'm wondering... is this really a pair... the uncle at the shop did a check.. as the auntie was unsure..

So here's what i know about identifying a female of this species

    - not as colourful
    - smaller than the males
    - Black chin
    - Black Ventral Fins
(correct me if i am wrong on any of these traits)

    Pictures of the "female"

just look at it... the dorsal is not generally like that of a female and the tail especially.. it's fully coloured/marked..like that of a male..
but the ventrals are Black and it has a black chin.

    Pictures of the Male

    Do help me out...
I kind of think it's a female... but so far none of the females i've had look like thid one.

Female usually has black markings on its ventral fins unlike males who doesn't.
I think the top picture is a female and the bottom is male.
    Can be wrong.

Thats the problem with farm bred, low quality Ap. Cacatuoides, always have the problem of differentiating the sex of the fish.

ps. Sorry if I have offended you.

I've not seen male Ap. Cacatuoides with black ventrals. I believe they are female Cacatuoides.

The one he thinks is a male is in the last 2 pictures, no black ventrals.

so the its probable that mine is a female... hmm i sure do hope so.
i know that these are not top quality fish.. but i'm still venturing into Apisto keeping.. i have 2 older males (got them from Biotope over some time ago) in my 2ft tanks.. they are doing ok... but at least 3 times the size of these new ones.
