Yes. They are smoke from joss stick.
ST-E2 With side lighting using a 580EX
Typical: 1/30, f/16, ISO 400

1. Do a invert in photoshop and you achieve the effect
2. Adjust contrast, hue/saturation to your liking

I was spectulating that the shot was made during Ching Ming. At the cemetaries during the joss paper burning with a bright sky as the background.
