Today (May 12, 2007) I went to check the habitat of Nepenthes northiana in an abandoned mining area near Bau town. When I reached there, I was shocked to see they used the bulldozer to clear the secondary forest where N. northiana was used to grow on the slope & under the small trees of that forest. Some people come here occasionally to search for gold & other mineral rocks even the mining activity has stopped very long time ago.

The bulldozer push all the rocks down this slope & killed all the Nepenthes northiana growing there!!! OH NO......

    The forest clearing.

    N. northiana grows on the limestone cliff.

Not far away, I found a secret trail which lead me to a spot where there are a lot of Nepenthes northiana. I hope those people won't come to destroy this part of "wild pitcher plant garden" forever.

The beautiful pitcher of Nepenthes northiana, endemic to Sarawak.

    Another big pitcher:

I can't believe it when I spotted this slipper orchid, Paphiopedilum stonei in such a low altitude!!! Usually it grows on the limestone cliff high above the ground.

And again, I was shocked to see another slipper orchid, Paphiopedilum lowii growing on a tree trunk so near to the ground!!! Usually, it grows on the tall tree near the forest canopy.....

Begonia pendula.....one of the beautiful Begonias from Bau:

    Hoya sp.

Not in that area. Nepenthes x cincta only found at the summit of another limestone hill about 2km away.

    Correction:

This frog is not Staurois natator, but Staurois guttatus as Staurois natator is an endemic species to Philippines.
