Hi all, does anyone have any experience with tanks on laminate flooring?
is it ok, good , bad, ugly?

i'm starting out new, but my living room is laminate flooring (brand new).
the kitchen is always there in case the verdict is that tanks on (hrm, wrought iron or cabinet?) laminate flooring is a no no.

Your laminate flooring is that those pacquet/wood look-alike surface type laminate right? if its is i will not encourage it as you will experience some trouble with the flooring in long term cos of the water from ur tank....thats wat my senior designer said...hehe

Stronly suggest you consider the kitchen option.

If I am not wrong, and if your flooring is what I think it is, the wooden pieces are not glue/cemented to the floor below it, instead, they are sort of like a jigsaw puzzle where each piece is fixed onto the adjoining piece via grooves. If so, then the weight of the tank may coz the adjoining pieces to come loose or pop out if the floor below them is not levelled properly.

The second reason is that laminated flooring, although laminated, still does not like water. When you have a tank, there's bound to be tank maintenance, and when you do, surely expect your floor to get wet. You can be very careful and wipe off drips and spills immediately but still... and don't forget, accidents do happen.

I've had tanks on laminate flooring so let me offer you my experience. My fishroom (and most parts of my house has this flooring. Total number of tanks in fishroom was 12 ,with most 2footers, a 4footer and a few 3 footers. Except for one 3 footer whick is on cabinet, the rest were on metal stands with wooden planks to spread the load over the floor surface. This setup in use for about 4yrs till i recently got rid of most of the tanks. After removal of all tanks. No damage was found on the flooring (nil scratches, indentation or bulging). I've had my share of water spillage as has any aquarist but I've always ensured they were cleaned up ASAP, not only because I love the flooring but also to ensure no accidents due to slippage. I guess thats the key to keeping laminate flooring in good condition if you intend on keeping tanks on them. Another thing to note. Ensure that the room is well aired so as to ensure the spillage dries up fast. its not impossible, you just have to be more careful with spillage. With one tank running I doubt it'll be much of a problem.

I have my tanks in my living room with laminate flooring for 5 years now. Got to be careful when changing water and wipe the spills as soon as possible. You will get a little bulging if water is absorbed by the flooring. For me, it is so far so good, no big problem.

laminated floor panels, especially the good brands, are incredibly tough. Just make sure they don't get water-logged.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

My old place uses laminated flooring.

Some area in my study room where my maid does her ironing has spotted bulging.

We have told ourselve not to use them anymore!

This is our experience. Even though there is no fish tank in the room. I guess the moisture came from regular mopping by the maid.

Therefore, i wont encourage putting a tank on laminated flooring since spillage is always by accident and not by choice.

Better to be safe than sorry. And it will give your spose a chance to nag at you if she didnt bless your hobby right from the beginning.
