how long did you cycle your tank with ADA soil? ADA soil have low pH buffer property, it also leak NH3/NH4 to the water, so cycle it properly
Recently, i rescaped by tank using ADA soil and added an airstone from the previous one that was using black quartz inert substrate w/o air stone. I noticed 90% of my shrimps huddled close to where the air stone is. Can they survive in aquarium w/o additional air support? My 1.3ft tank is around 80% planted and is using liberty hang on filter (i thought that was enough, until recently, my adult shrimps started dying one by one but the shrimplets survived). The adult shrimps which died was cleaning some food off the moss then it just died off. The dead bodies were of normal colour, not fried red color. Some forumer told me that perhaps its due to lack of oxygen. Opinions?

It was a used ADA soil from another tank.
The adult shrimp deaths were previously from when i wasnt using ADA soil.

my experience with ADA soil, after some rescape if I did not do water change, it will cause casualty. Eventhough the filter is mature.
I've done a 30-40% water change a day after the rescape. Is shrimps huddling together soon after adding ADA soil normal? Is it just the acclimatisation period?
from what i know.. shrimps or prawn love bubbles.. they went to the air stone because they love bubbles but not lack of oxygen..
Hi,
My office CRS tank don't have any air pump or filter, just lots of moss.![]()
If so, then I'm just pondering over the mystery of my adult shrimps dying off one by one. Baby shrimps survive though.
I think it depends on the species of the shrimps. Ghost shrimp is said to be tolerable in low oxygen conditions. I have also read that some other shrimps do require high level of disolved oxygen (DO).
Since rescaping (and water change) is the only change that was done, you could have stirred up something undesirable. This could have effected the water quality, causing the oxygen level to drop. Although you may have changed the water a day later, the damage could have already been done.
In any case, do a search and you will find that death after rescaping seems to be something common reported by shrimp keepers (there are exceptions of course). It is probably not advisable to rescape if the inhabitants are in the same tank.
What you can do now is probably to increase aeration, possibly tests for ammonia/nitrite/nitrate and take the reactive actions.
did you did some water testing on the parameters?
No, i didnt do any testing of the water parameters as its just a simple tank setup. Tank is around 2+ months old. I plan to remove 2 big plants and replace them with 1 smaller plant as it covers too much of the tank and i cant see much of the shrimps. I hope the slight ADA substrate agitation wont cause further shrimp deaths. Plan to add more shrimps once scape is settled and no more shrimp deaths over the next few days or so.
Meanwhile, since i added the airstone, i notice the shrimps do not rush for food anymore as though they are now more pre-occupied with the air bubbles. They dont seem to eat that well as before. I feed small amounts once a day.
It is not the airstone but the rescape. Your water parameters and conditions have possibly changed due to the rescape, therefore your shrimps are probably adapting to the changes.
Even for simple tanks, any changes introduced can affect them, so it has been advised not to introduce drastic changes to their environment. If not intending to test anything, continue to monitor and take the reactive actions as and when needed.
