PUB water has very low or nil kH, that explains why your tank water's pH plunges to 4.5 after adding blackwater. Watch your dose of blackwater as sudden swing of pH can kill your fish.

hmm i just did a test...had tap water and put in blackwater again...this time my ph is at 6.5 though =( tank water is still at 4.5 and now i'm wondering how on earth to get such low ph for my water change that's due in a couple of days =( even if i do a small 20% change the ph will still rise and will probably be harmful for my fish right? perhaps i'll need to tolerate brownish water and get the sera peat granules that eman recommends

update on my tank: just put in a ceramic chinese teacup 3 inch diameter 2 inch depth as a 2nd cave for my apistos...so far they're loving it, but my BNs seem to love it too so they're taking turns to occupy the cave...looks like a rather successful yet cheap experiment =)
