Ahhhh. That is good to know.

I was particularly interested in one shrimp that is red/white stripe (quite small in size) but very pretty.

Heard that it needs quite a low temp to do well. So I am just trying out to see how to play with a simple chiller setup.

So no need 21-22C (this is going to be hard to get).
I have to invest in a big enough chiller, pay high electrical bills to maintain that low a temp and I am not sure if the other fishes and plants that I already have will co-exist ?

the shrimp you taking about is CRS
temp set at 24-25 is suitable for them
but most important for crs is your water parameter as they are very sensitive creatures
keeping with other fishes is not advisable unless you planted tank has alot of hiding places for the crs.
shrimplet survival rate will be low with fishes in the tank.

In that case I would consider another smaller 1 footer tank to see how well I can manage this creatures.

I travel quite often and my mum takes takes general care of the stuff. If it needs a lot of attention to survive, then I would most probably kill them.

Where do you recommend to go to have good advise on a setup for the above ?

For what I know is that your internal filter may increase your tank Temperature up to 31 C if you on for 24hrs , if not you can try to off your internal filter for a night and see what is the temperature when you wake up next morning.

Heard about that. Will switch the internal one off when I am back next week and give a feedback whether it works better to bring the temp down further.

Just checked, the temperature at night is actually higher (weird).
But the temp is hovering around 26.5 to 27.5 on the chiller and the external one is reading 25.5 to 26.5. So I am quite happy.

But FAN needs to be on. Everybody is telling me the CL85 is too small for my tank. Looks like I have an opportunity to hunt again and downgrade this one for a much smaller tank.

Thankyou everyone for all the input and advise

did you place the cl85 at a well ventilated place? hot exhaust air blown out in close proximity to your tank will be absorbed back into your tank again. try to divert the hot air away; maybe to the outside of your house.

tem devices have a hot and a cold side. to achieve 25 deg c on the cold side, the hot side will be about 85 deg c, ie a 60 deg c differential. if the is insufficient cooling air to keep the hot side at 85 deg c or below, you will not be able to achieve the 25 deg c that you wish for.

try adding styrofoam sheets to sides of your aquarium to minimise heat absorption. see if it helps before you start hunting another chiller.

    salexjared,

Would you mind take some images on your setup?

Images like the overall view. Location of the fish tank, pump and the Cl85

From here maybe, the forummers can understand it better.

After all the monies spent, might as well troubleshoot it. Keep your monies first. Sounds good?

    Excellent ideas.

I would be back home this weekend and I would take some photos to share and see if there are some great ideas for a small TEM chiller to work on my setup.

My chiller is outside the cabinet to give it better ventilation. Tried to put a FAN on it but did not help. I could not find a hot and cold side to this TEM (you are talking internal plate temperature?). It has a filtered vent on the left and right and both are giving out hot air. And it is definitely not 85C (feels like 40C or less).

For my tank it has its back to a wall that has the afternoon sun, so it may be quite hot, would take your advise to put a foam to that side to see how much "shelther" it can provide.

I do have some puffers (<2cm size) to clean up my tank of snails. It is working out fine for this "ecosystem". My tank is under control for snails and my puffers are happy. I have only around 3 snails that is growing in size (too big for my puffers). Can't put my CRS into this tank (I think) ? Right ?

Wanted to go to shenzhen this weekend to visit the wholesale but was stop by a very big storm. Will let you know what they have as a bargin next time I window shop there.

the wall with afternoon sun will heat up the tank.
try placing the chiller further away from you tank or at least divert the exhaust air away.

the hot side and cold side are inside the chiller housing. you'll not see it unless you open up your chiller (don't try it unless you know what you are doing). the hot side is attached to heat sinks and fans while the cold side is attached to a cold plate. your aquarium water is cooled by flowing through this cold plate.

the exhaust air will not be 85 deg c but something much lower. 40 deg c looks okay so your chiller is working.
