My first Iwagumi try, any comments are welcome.

I'm using Tom Barr's idea of growing foreground emmerse and flood it afterward. Hopefully it won’t melt when I flood it. I worried that it is not enough light though .

    Tank size: 12"x6"x7"
    Light: 18 Watts
    Substrate: ADA aquasoils africana

Flora: Hemianthus callitrichoides and hairgrass (Eleocharis acicularis?)

did you use base fert Robert? ime africana is quite nutrient poor so root tabs or base ferts might be needed

arg.. software bug, or maybe features

I was uploading it at attachements section instead of galary section. Aparently it was auotomatically deleted when there is no thread link to it. I upload the picture to the galaray and fix the link. Everyone whould be able to see the picture now.

dunno if it's just me, but your rocks seem too clumped together in the middle..maybe spread them out abit more?

Nice frontal view... can imagine it to look really nice. Please update us with more pics once your HC & hairgrass cover the substrate.

yeah take a while to collect the right rock. Not many/none of the shop close to my place selling black granite.

My tank is small, so can't spread them out. I'm hopping that HC will grow and slightly cover some part of the rock.

Hi uklau and Aquaculture, thanks for the compliment, will post the progress. Next picture update probably when I'm about to flood the tank.

I hope both HC and hairgrass are growing emmerse. First time growing it emmerse and I have no idea how to keep it moisture. I do have acrylic to cover the top.

Please post progress updates as I'm also contemplating on Tom's idea of growing HC/foreground immerse (worry also about the melting part when the foreground goes submerse)

Especially when you "flood" your tank.

Nice setup. Should look very nice if they can grow and cover the foreground. Keep posting.

    Time for update

After 3 weeks, most of the HC seems to be growing "slowly". To my surprise algae is also grow . Is that terrestrial algae?

yeah I though so too, the method suppose to prevent algae but does not seems so in my case.

Is this green thing on the ADA surface really an algae?

No because I do not have any glass cover. I only top up the water a litle bit every day until I can barely see the water on the lowest slope of the substrate.

By the way do not add concetrated ferteliser, I tried that and the HC around the area that I drop the fert in become dry (dry not melt). My guess is the cocentrated fert will force water out of the plant.

Don't know why, but I have better luck when I use Amazonia instead of Africana when it comes to HC.

P.S. This is what part of the alphabet would look like if Q and R were eliminated.

maybe because Africana have the least nutrient.

Since your HC start spreading, what is the suitable time to "flood" the tank?
