Tips for conditioning new shrimps in your tanks

Hey, look guys. You can't simply float the bags of shrimp around for awhile and dump everything in. The temperature maybe conditioned to the tank, but the water is not. If the drip method is too troublesome, float the bag in the tank and poke a couple of holes to let the water mix. Leave it there for a few hours and add more holes during that time. I do that with 100% survival.

No need for thanks, just glad to share. One more thing, maybe its a good practice to wash the outside of the bag first. Recently when I went to an LFS to pick up some cherries, the pre-packed shrimps were sitting in a tub with some dead cockroaches. It didn't cross my mind until sometime after I released the shrimps. Lucky me, no 'heibee'.

My method:

1) After brought home the bag of shrimp, i will wash the plastic bag to ensure it is completely clean and will put the bag in the tank for a hour to let shrimp get use the temp. Afterwhich transfer them into a tauhau plastic container (some holes about 1 to 2 cm were create at the cover). I will keep about half the orginal water in the container. Every half hour add a spoonful or 2 of tank water into it through the holes. After about 4 hrs, the container will be quite full then can scoop shrimps and add into tank. I will not add any of the plastic bag water into my tank as the original water may contain undesirable stuff.

2) Always throw some moss or the plastic mesh or cotton into the container as well so that shrimps got something to hold on to.

3) I will use bryan method of poking holes in the plastic bag ONLY when the livestock is from reliable source eg bro from the forum. Their water will be clean and safe to be added to our main tank directly.

4) Finally i think the dripping method is still the best if you can afford the time and patience. For me, i find my method very convenient and easy. so far, no losses of shrimps using this method.

What you guys think about those bags with words or prices written with marker that cannot be washed off?
Call me paranoid but i always try to float the bag in such a way the marker wordings don't get soak in the water. Better safe than sorry

haha no one can blame us for being paranoid. Most of us in this hobby tends to be so as we have suffer from too many unintended mistakes.

Anyway for me, i dont really bother if the ink is permanent. If it is erasable, then when i wash the bag, it will comes off.

Anyway when in doubt, dont dump the bag in your tank, place in the plastic container, with the original water still in the container, the shrimp will not be subjected to temp shock.

I use dripping method, I don't want water from other sources to get into my tank, I don't know what they will come with.

I usually put shrimps plus water it come with in a 10 liter pail, and drip water from my tank, it will take 2 to 3 hrs to fill the 10 liter pail. Then I scoop the shrimps and put into the tank. Now the tank has less water, the next day, I will add in more water.

Got the value and the tube and was testing it out while doing a water change for my CRS.

I think my CRS very much prefer dripping method (value open slightly more than usual dripping method) of water change than pour so much new water into the tank at once.

Just a general question, by this dripping method, how much do we drip ? any guide ?
4 hours of dripping or drip to a qty of water ?

Qn: since LFS sell shrimps often in a plastic bag w water of unknown source, wouldn't that already mean buying is a risk? No matter how diligent I am at mixing water from my tank before intro the shrimps in... still getting some casualties

Hi recently very successfully conditioned my sulawesi shrimps by the drip method. I will only use this method from now on. Took me a whole night but very happy with the end result
