The parents had perished if I am not wrong.

hi bros
Firstly, congratulations bro Wackytpt.
Secondly - are Breitbindens the same as Megapteras?
and finally,
where can I get Breitbindens?

mematrix is from the US and to find Breitbinden here now is not so easy.
@mematrix, sorry but the fish are showing their stress coloration. You need to give them time to settle in and watch as their colors develop and then compare them to available photos online for the population/form in question.
@EdwinTay, possibly not the same fish. Read this entry for more info:

IIRC, true Breitbinden have an impressive set of extended dorsal fin rays and the color scheme is quite distinctive on their own. This is the "Breitbinden" that I remember seeing long ago locally: http://www.hrs19a.net/aquarium/photo...reitbinden.jpg (Photo from a Japanese site hrs19a.net)

Thank You for your replies and info yes finding them breitbinden here in states is difficult I got my fingers crossed that i lucked out and yes they are young and still need maturing for positive id I do have a breeder here in states that has megaptera and when his spawn im in linealso working on getting some Apistogramma sp. Wilhelmi. AKA "Abacaxis" also they have finally hit USA

If they are red cheeks then the markings on the gill covers will show themselves during the threat display of the males. Good luck with the fish mate, hope they spawn for you soon.![]()

hi bro Stormhawk. Thanks for all the info.
The reason I asked is that I am stuck with 1 megaptera spangle & 1 breitbinden (they look the same to me). I am not really sure if they are both females or not but, I have put them together - so far no fighting but....no breeding too...sigh!!!

Well, there's a bit of confusion where megaptera is concerned. The photos in the original description are those of A. sp. "Breitbinden" but according to the physical traits mentioned in the paper, it conforms to that of A. sp. "Breitbinden-Kurzlappen" aka A166. If you have the Cichlid Atlas 1 and 2 by Romer I think you can compare the image to your megaptera if it's in either Atlas. A whole discussion is seen here:
http://www.apistogramma.com/forum/in...olombia.12494/
Based on the info within, A164 is the true "Breitbinden", A165 is the Red Cheek aka Sao Gabriel, A166 is megaptera aka cf.sp. "Breitbinden-Kurzlappen".
