Hi all,
I need to know more about substrate as I am thinking of a rescape and want to do a simple set up which would hopefully be able to last me a long time.

1stly, regarding anaerobic substrate. How can this be prevented? Or delayed?
Besides having a thin gravel substrate and using a gravel cleaner, which is out of the question for a planted set up, how can this be prevented in teh long run?

2ndly, regarding ADA aquasoil, what is the 'lifespan' of this? of course heavier root feeding platns means faster depletion of nutrients, but a rough estimate/average would be good enough. And besides the nutrient issue, ADA aquasoil also helps to lower pH - I have heard that after several years this effect may wear off? What are the solutions to this problem, besides a rescape?

For large aquaria, generally what methods are adopted to ensure the tank can 'last' longer? - as, again, I hope to make this set up last at least a couple of years more.

thanks
Lam
