Help ID plant deficiency

Hi,

I need help in identifying which trace element this Elatine is lacking? Thanks.

Please help me ID this plant too.

Check TheKrib's and Chuck Gadd's tables.

Can't really tell. From the charts, it could be K (potassium).

If you're dosing liquid trace fert, then deficiency is most likely one of the macro nutrients. Which liquid fert are you using? Not all of them contain K which has no natural source in the tank. Are you using any other liquid fert like Fe (iron)?

Using E15, V30, Seachem Fluorish and Potassium.

These will cover everything except NO3 and PO4. Have you tested these levels?

Does your plant have storage roots shaped like a minature banana? Looks like banana plant leh...

My glosso was once like that. But I didn't figured out what was wrong. Better test your NO3 and PO4 to get a better idea.

BTW - the gravel in both photos look different. Different tanks? The Elantine seem to be growing in the volcanic substrate Teo Farm was selling...

The roots are not shaped like miniature bananas.

Koah Fong and Vinz,

I just measured the NO3 level. Seems to be 1ppm. Difficult to differentiate the colour. I dun have the PO4 test kit. The pic showing the elatine is my 2ft with Dennerle gravel. It is lighted with 2x36W. The other is the 5ft with Lonestar gravel.

Try to get your NO3 up to 5ppm and see the response. Read this thread: Observations on Elatiane triandra (APP)

Kingpin:

Try feeding more to your fish, especially Blood Worms. That can raise NO3 as well.

Hi Kingpin

I am having somewhat similar problems now that you had previously.

Old Elatine leaves melts or turns brownish, and new leaves appear wrinkled.

How's the current situation with your elatine now? Are they growing healthy, if so like to hear from your experiences how you solve the problem.

It is the lack of NO3/PO4 like what Koah Fong suggested because of the low bioload I have. My elatine is growing very well now.

What I did was feeding more to my fishes and changed water every 2 weeks instead of every week. That might have built up the NO3 and PO4 in the water column. I also upped the CO2 injection to the point my CO2 indicator turned yellowish green compared to the previous dark green.

wahboy's right, definitely an Echinodorus. You need to show us the submersed leaves to attempt an ID.

thanks ... I believe my bio-load is quite high already; thats why I have some algae.
Maybe I have to test my nitrate level.
btw how does your co2 indicator works, do u place it in the tank like a thermometer. How much it cost and where to get one?

Bennyp,

You should be able to purchase this CO2 indicator from most LFS. You either place underwater or just above the water surface. There are many brands available. Sera, Dennerle, Dupla, JBL etc. Their price range from $15-$20, depending on the brand.

I think you test your NO3 first. I didnt test the NO3 for my 2ft. Since the elatine is growing well and there isnt much algae, I just leave it as it is.
