Hi, i'm new to keeping shrimps and was told need to keep the water cool to prevent the shrimps from dying off. Question is do I put both the fan and lighting on the same timer or is the fan on perpetually? appreciate any advice, thks!!

I had mine operating 24 hours daily.

Longer time operating equal more water evaporation.

hmmm, so either way also can...

silly question, but shouldn't water and air temp be about the same at any point of the day assuming i don't turn on the lamp? so how does blowing air bring down the water temperature?

Air and water have different heat capacities so their temperatures would be different. The vehicles of heat exchange for these two fluids are also different.

Blowing air lowers the temperature of the tank water through evaporation. But this method would typically be only able to lower the tank water temperature a couple of degrees below the ambient temp.

I've got 2 fans. One is on 24/7 while the other is hooked up to the timer, together with the lights.

mine also 24 hours because it take quite some time for the water temp to drop. I'm not sure which one faster though, water warm up by light or cool down by fan

You should switch the fan on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This also helps to reduce temperature fluctuations (at least I think so ).

thanks for the replies, now turn on my fan 24/7 separate from the lighting. only thing is that the water level drops pretty fast, have to top up at least once every 2 days

yup, water will drop very fast, especially in hot day. Once every 2 day is good, I top up my 2ft tank 2 liter every day.

Fan cools the temperature by evaportion, therefore the frustration of topping up water ever now and then. Coupled with that I always leave/treat my water overnight before introducing it into my tank. So always have a pail of water lying around.... till my wife complain.

Recently Jiahe88 helped me get a Hailie chiller. Cheap and good. Wife's quiet about my hobby, I'm happy...

just curious, with the water level dropping so fast becos of the fan, is there still a need to 'change' water by removal and topping up or will topping up just suffice?

you will still need to change water. evaporation does not get rid of accumulated waste/minerals in the water and physical removal of the water is needed to remove some of it and then dilute the concentration by adding in fresh water

    Hi,
Can 24/7 fan really cool down water rather than putting chiller?

It does cool the water down 2 to 3 degress from your room temperature. Problem with using fan is the constant topping up of water as it cools the water down by evaporating the water.... very frustrating especially when you have a small tank and you have to top up almost every 2 days or even every day. But the rewards are great....
