You can consider the Eheim 2211 too.
But Eden 501 is just nice for 1ft cube.
anyone have recommendations? preferable for me would be one that has a larger internal volume so that i can have more media inside =)
would those cheap HOB filters be good enough with enough space for media, or would i need to spend 4-5x more for a small canister like the Eden 501 (which seems quite tight on space anyway right?). i was thinking of getting 2x HOB for more space at a cheaper price, but afraid that the flowrate will be too high for such a small tank
any advice?
You can consider the Eheim 2211 too.
But Eden 501 is just nice for 1ft cube.
i'm just afraid of not enough canister space for media la
i'm used to having alot of biomedia, a sponge and some activated carbon in my filter, due to the 3 tier OHF i use in my 2ft tank...now with no tiered OHF for my 1ft i feel very crippled with no space for so much media keke
I second going for Eden501. Using that for my 1ft cube too. Quiet and efficient filter.

yo bro...Eheim 2211 is good
just got back from C328, Eheim 2211 is beyond my budget, unless someone has a 2ndhand one to sell within the next week.
i went to look at the Eden 501 and saw a Resun about the same size with 200L/h flowrate going for about half the price...wonder if that's a good buy?
edit: model is Resun Cyclone CY20...another alternative is a big Atman HOB filter (apparently new model introduced in aquarama) but its 600li/hour and smaller internal space forr media...but 1/4 the price of an Eden and 1/2 the price of the Resun....dilemma =(

May I know what the price for Eden501?
I saw a similar design in SeaView, 7-stars 60+ and Shirabu 50+.
Eden 501 is about 1 big blue note
what's the relative price of the other 2 filters you mentioned?
$60+ and $50+ respectively. Forgot the model no.
If I'm unable to get something 2ndhand, based on brand new prices i think i've narrowed down 2 choices:
Resun Cyclone CY-20 - External canister similar to Eden 501 running at 200l/h
Atman HF-600 - Hangon filter running at 650l/h that i think comes with a surface skimmer as well
i'm not sure about the internal media capacity of both, but i think the Resun should have higher capacity given that it's a canister? 650l/h is definitely an overkill in flowrate for my tank, but the Atman is cheaper and comes with a surface skimmer and it has a valve to control flowrate (though to be fair it does look abit flimsy and i'm not sure how well it'll work). flowrate can also probably be reduced by packing it with media and using a sponge prefilter? of course the only downside is the amount of media i can actually fit into it, and the flowrate is still a little worrying given that i'll be using ADA aquasoil which might break up.
can anyone help me decide which to take? =) The resun is 1.5-2x the price of the Atman
Found another at Wu Hu today...Dolphin 500...the internal capacity is about 80% that of a Eden 501...very tempting
I would recommend an Eheim Liberty 100 or 150.

Correction...
7-star for $58 & Shirabu for $48. Price b4 10% discount.
Illumnae, don't focus too much on the one time cost & forget about the running cost. 1W makes a big difference when it is running 24x7 for few years. Eheim is good in the way that the running cost is low & has resale value (if you think of upgrading or give up the hobby). Just my 2 cents.
Cheers,

The Resun filter is not really worth it. The parts are quite cheaply made and felt very flimsy to me. The Seven Star filter is a better choice and uklau has made some good points.

P.S. This is what part of the alphabet would look like if Q and R were eliminated.
imo, just buy a new eden.
its 50 bucks and for around the same price, i'll take it over the seven star or shiruba
its small, quiet and just nice for your needs
comes with everything included so no additional costs
has some resale value too.
I ended up getting the Atman 600li/hour HOB filter at less than 1/3 almost 1/4 the price of an Eden 501. I'm very impressed with its internal volume...i used the provided cartridge with floss and activated carbon (which in itself is a space guzzler...i can probably fit in more floss and activated carbon if i put it in individually instead of using the cartridge) and yet still have tons of space left for biomedia.
the flowrate is adjustable too, so it ends up not being too strong for my 1ft cube despite its high flowrate. here's one satisfied customer!
Can i put the filter on the same level as my tank? I wonder whether it will have any priming issue? Generally, the tank must be higher than the filter right?
It is a HOB. So it is a hang on the side kind of filter. Priming not an issue most of the time for HOB as long as it meets the minimum water level requirement.
