    Hi,

Is it good to use rain pip for the outlet in a planted tank?

    Hi Stephen,

Do you mean rain bar? (can imagine it is also called a rain pipe). If so, I believe quite a number of people do use it in their outlet, on the premise that it will better eliminate dead spots in the tank and help distribute dissplved co2(assuming the rain bar is connected to the outlet of external co2 reactor).

I'm using it, to spread the flow more evenly and as Bossteck said, to prevent dead spots. Seems algae favour dead spots...

I have a separate power for the co2 reactor. The rain bar is connected to the outlet of the chiller which is connected to the filter.

That should be the correct way of configuration. But is you filter stronge enough to push the water flow?

Rainbar need to be below water surface.

The rainbar is beneath the water surface.

I have been placing my rain bar vertically down on the rear right corner of my tank. My water flow goes like:

Tank -> surface skimmer -> canister filter -> fluidized bed filter -> chiller ->external CO2 reactor ->vertical rain bar -> tank.

Had this configuration for over a year already and so far so good.

Where did you get the fluidized bed filter?

I got it from a now no more aquarium at Kembangan. Can't remember it's name already but I am sure some of the more senior members around know it too. But I saw petsmart at serangoon north selling some time back. If you are going HK, can consider getting it from there as I saw they have much more choices of brands and sizes compared to what I have found in Singapore. And it was cheaper there too.

You use it as a filter or a reactor. Depends what kind of media you put inside.

I had heard people saying beneath the water surface (not sure how deep), and the holes 5 degree upwards. This is to achieve water surface motion.

I also wish to know more about this. Thanks

I did this with my Eden 501 spray bar. Just slightly beneath the water surface with the holes about 5 degree upwards... this creates water surface movement and water circulation right at the surface. This also helps to lower the temperature by 1 degC as there are water movement at the surface. Prepare to top up some water everyday

I'm placing the rainbar with holes 5 deg upward to create wave. No specific depth. Near to water surface, the surface motion stronger.

In fact, the holes can be position horizontally but must very near water surface.

Likewise 5 deg downward but slightly above water surface.

    This is very interesting.
    What filter are you using?
Wouldn't the flow out of the tank become very slow with the fluidized filter and CO2 reactor?
