blackout works but yr plant will suffer, most green algae can be cured using blackout method (using a dark colored cloth or anything large to cover the whole day for a few days, no feed, no light)

or u have reduce feeding, water change, remove manually, add more algae eaters, wash filter

I used to have this problem.here are some measures I took tt helped cured the problem...

    (1) Remove as much as possible manually

    (2) Change 25% of H2O

    (3) put in a few floating plants, with roots, so as to remove excess
    nutrients in the water colume

    (4) Get some algae eaters

    (5) Reduce Lighted hours to abt 10hrs [used to have abt 15++]

    (6) Reduce fertilizer dosing

Hope at least 1 of these few can help []

    Simon,
He asked about "black water" not "blackout".

    RNose,
Hair algae can be easily removed by SAE or 3 line pencilfish.
I agree with the rest, manually removing is the best.
    Cheers!!

Mine is heavily infested with hair algae and also patches of very greenish algae that is quite stink when you remove them... what are those algae? what to do to combat them? best and effective way... i have tried removing them but is too tedious, too much... how? what to do?

my advice is to slowly remove them bit by bit if it's too much. Try to be more patient... I'm sure you'll be able to combat it.

As for the algae.. are you sure it's hair algae? Hair algae can easily be solved by SAE or pencilfish. If it's BBA, then it's a different story. Can you describe the algae one more time in more detail to make sure we're on the right frequency?
    Cheers!!

The smelly algae is likely Blue-Green algae caused by bacteria.

I disagree. The green algae will probably outlast your plants. IMO, blackout is probably only good for GW and BGA.
