Any Dicrossus filamentosus keepers out there know what the adult size of these cichlids is? Fishbase says 3.8cm, but other sources state that it can get up to 8-10cm.

    Thanks!

Note that Fishbase size is SL (standard length). Most other websites probably uses TL (total length).

    Dicrossus filamentosus

Does anyone here have any experience with this fish? Just did a water change (~10%!) and half an hour later, one of the Dicrossus is gasping and going belly up.. Sigh. Quite sure there's nothing wrong with the water. Also, the other fish are fine. Anyone know what might be the problem? I know that they're sensitive to water conditions but I didn't expect it to be this extreme.

Would appreciate any info/advice regarding this fish.. thanks much.

    This is strange.
They are not really that sensitive to exhibit that kind of behaviour.

How long have you gotten the fish?

Mine are still happily swimming even after a 50% water change....

It could be problem with the fish.....many of such fish are sold in rather unhealthy conditions, unsunken belly, etc.

Always good to check condition and health of fish before buying.

Valice: Not too long, I suspect that was the reason. The other one is ok though. Love your flickr gallery, btw Mind sharing any tips for keeping Dicrossus?

Cacatuoides: I think that's part of the problem too, they weren't kept in the best of conditions. Of course I wouldn't have bought the fish if they looked unhealthy lah. Maybe just bad luck, the shop tank was quite overcrowded. Should have given them more time to settle in. But Dicrossus not so common so took a chance!

    Where did you buy from?

Dicrossus filamentosus are quite common, unlike its counterpart D. maculatus.....I have 2 pieces of wild D. filamentosus which are growing up and coloring brilliantly in my washroom

Well, they certainly aren't as popular as apistos. I suspect mine are hobbyist or farm (??) bred. Haha, in your washroom? What's the setup like?

I have 2 tanks in my washroom, just a thin layer of ADA and a simple sponge filter only....the fishes are more happy than the ones in my bedroom, maybe more privacy

    Dicrossus filamentosus photos

Compared to the experts here I probably know very little, but posting these anyway. Taken in daylight, though the colours look a bit washed out. What cameras do you guys use?

NIce checkerboards.....do pump them up with frozen or live brine shrimp as they seem to have a little sunken stomach

Nice. What's the pH in the tank like? These usually color up better with a lower pH. Also, the light in the tank might be a bit too strong, hence the light coloration.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Thanks Cacatuoides and benny! Yes they're quite fussy when it comes to eating. They won't go up to the surface for food. The pH in the tank is about 6 or so..

Question Need information on Dicrossus filamentosus

    Hello from Athens,Greece!
I have 4 pairs of dicrossus filamentosus in my 400 litre tank and I would like to ask you for some advices!
I know that they are bottom feeders and dwellers and also peacefull community fish...
My first question is if they are suitable to get along with 5-6 discus (even if they spawn, are they still peacefull, or become agressive as apistos do) in 400 litres, because I'm thinking of buying some...
My second question is if they are cave-spawners or open area ones...
And last what type of aquascape do you think is best for them and if they need places to hide and rest, like caves or something else...
    Thank you in advance...

First as cichlids, they may be dwarf but they can be hell of a bully when comes to spawning. The female is highly territorial during brood care period.

    They are open spawner.
Lots of driftwood with moss tied on them, if possilbe give them a amazon- look-alike tank.
