I am curious about how the quality of the apisto is reduced over time through inbreeding, so why isn't anyone here exchanging young apistos with each other to reduce inbreeding? Would appreciate if someone could enlighten me, because this question has been hanging on my head for a long time.

Interbreed sometimes help to upkeep the straint-line too. It does not necessary downgrade the quality. Its not that hobbyist do not exchange, it is that there are too many species of apistos to keep and hard to get replacement if one of them died. Another problem is our tank constraint. When we started off with apisto keeping, newbies tend to go for the beginner species, then they move off the the intermediate one. Lastly the exotic ones. How are we going to keep track with the species we have in our market. Moreover, Apisto fries growth rate are relatively slow, not many have the patient to keep them till sub-adult.

Right on! Apsito fries takes between 6mths to 12mths to mature depending on the species. To cross breed, you'll need lots of tanks. Not many have the luxury of that.

Moreover, to improve the quality of the fishes, you'll have to select the best male to mate with the best female. This again, is not easy to find....
