how does this goes about.

Wild fish = F0 or P0(doesn't matter)
The F0 will give off to F1 generation fry.
what if the F1 fry is cross back to the F0 parents will it be F3? Then at the same time with two F2 generation spawning will it produce F3 or F4 generation fry?

Is it mathematical or ?

F0 = wild-caught specimen
F1 = spawn of F0
F2 = spawn of F1

I don't think it matters who crosses with what. I believe F2 is to establish that it is a viable lineage.

Ya as Hwchoy says,
The 'F' thingy will go down as the 'F' is used to count generations. Meaning F1 is parental 'generation' of F2...Backcrossing , in breeding or line-breeding does not matter.

What I do not know --- First brood of F0 is F1. Is second brood of F0 still F1? [:]

of course, this is by definition as all broods of F0 are siblings. Draw a family tree and you will understand. [:]

i personally think that once you inbreed the fish the F notation can go out the window liao

Yimin, depends on what you mean by "inbreed".

If you cross F0 with F1, and if F0 is the female then technically the offspring will be F1, if F1 is the female then technically the offsprint is now F2.

The Fn notation simply signifies the generation away from the wild-caught specimen, I suppose the reference is based on the female specimen. Crossing F0 with F1 doesn't mean necessary the SAME F0 specimen that had given rise to the F1. So it doesn't NECESSARY means inbreeding.

However I am threading on dangerous grounds. Perhaps we can ask the APA, or some one knows some zoologist or icthylogist (spelling?) can ask for definitive answer.
