    Hi all,

Just gotten myself a new Eheim 2229 wet/ dry canister.

Hooked it up easily to my 4ft tank and was running in a jiffy.

The water level in the side columnar tube (protein skimmer lookalike tube) would rise and fall in rhythm with the fill/ drain of the water within the canister.

    However,
    (1) Upon closer inspection, the water level in the tube never exceeds the bottom edge of the sponge inside the tube. Is this normal? I thought the wter level is supposed to completely fill & drain the side tube? (i.e. completely submerge the sponge before draining)

    (2) My 2229 also makes a constant gurgling noise. Does this mean it's wrongly setup?

Any kind souls who can advise on the matter?

    Thanks in advance!

Sorry bro but I have never use a 2229 before. Maybe someone else has experience with this model.
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.

    Hi Cphile,

My 2229 used to fill and drain till I change the outlet to a longer rain bar. I was told by one LFS that this is due to the different length of in/out pipe. Never bother to fix the problem. Now it is functioning as a normal filter.

Back to your question, my previous observation is that the water level will not exceed the bottom of the sponge. But if your look carefully, the sponge will be a half soak with water. IMHO the main thing for the water in the tube is to lift the float in the tube and activate the pump out action.

As for the gurgling sound, it may cause by some water left in the small “breathing” tube. Try to clear the water by slightly lifting the hose and see whether the sound disappear.
