    Friends,

Apparently the glow-in-the-dark zebra danios went on sale in the US in 2003. But I don't notice them on sale in Singapore.

It's a shame not to be able to get them in Sg because they were originally produced here.

    Anybody has any leads?

    Thanks,

    K

US authorities, for various reasons, take a very light view of genetic modification of organisms, be it for food or other purposes.

Most other countries have differing views, that to various degrees invoke the precautionary principle, which is to say, 'the risk and uncertain effects of such organisms, which contain totally alien genes, getting into natural environments is far too high and outweighs whatever supposed benefits they offer.'

This is just the ecological objection. My own view from the aesthetic angle, though you are free to disagree, is that wild forms of fish are much nicer (and usually cheaper too) and more vibrant than probably any man-made strains.

They are digusting fake and it is so cruel to genetiically modifed the fishes. Have no idea why people would like those fishes.

They were available for a very short period of time when there was a shipment that slipped through in 2005. However these fishes are banned in Singapore and I'm afraid you won't be able to get them here through the normal channels.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

I found red zebra danios in Singapore today... it does glow... not sure if you people are referring to the same species. It is available in one of Seletar farm near Jalan Kayu.

Some photos in this link... http://www.5dtropical.com/5dglofish.htm

Considering that Glofish (aka glow-in-the-dark zebra danios) is banned in Singapore, I am not sure that is what you saw. Many fishes do "glow" when provided with lights of certain wavelength.

I suspect what you saw as red zebra danios could probably be Danio sp. aff. kyathit (sp. "redfin"), but then all this is just conjecture.

The ones I saw are not only red in their fins... but body is red as well.
It looks exactly like those in the URL that I have provided.

I don't know that these are banned fish but they are certainly selling here.

If true, then it doesn't sound good. I wonder what is the appeal of genetically modified fishes.

I read on the internet recently that this sort of glow danios are invented by scientist initially to detect pollutants. Somehow they are introduced into the fish market for $$.

But what I read is that they use natural invention and not artificial chemical to make them glow. They are somehow injected into the eggs and not directly into the fishes. They are not posionous if other fishes eat them and if they do breed, their fries retain the same body color as their parents.

Yes, I do know that. Regardless, it is a fact that they are genetically engineered.

I am just that saying, natural fishes appeal to me personally, no matter how drab they look.
