Height of lighting system

What should be the height of the lighting system of a planted tank with reference from the surface of water in the tank?Thanks.

That would depend greatly on what type of lighting you are using and what kind of effect you want to achieve.

On general, fluoroscent tubes are hang at around 3-5 inches above water surface.

Metal halides are to be hanged higher, usually 10-12 inches, or even more from the surface.
