You planted on substrate with its rhizome buried?
Hi guys,
Anyone had tried out and had success with the "Philippine" variant of Java ferns?
I have tried them out on 3 separate occasions in different tanks at different places (both high light/co2 enriched and low light/low tech setups) and all 3 times they looked fine for the 1st month or so, then experienced a total meltdown
and i really mean total meltdown
the leaves all melted, and the rhizomes basically all turned black and then died
the other plants and the fauna were all totally fine though
i can't quite figure out the problem here and wonder if anyone can advise
You planted on substrate with its rhizome buried?
It is a hardy plant. Shouldn't be so easy "died" unless rhizome buried!
Where did you bought it? Colourful?
Perharps, you could back to the lfs and ask.![]()
If we are talking about the real "phillipines" from Tropica, yes, they sometimes melt for no apparent reasons but usually the rizhome will survive to put out new leaves. Maybe it is my water, I really don't know.

I have the same experience. I have probably tried this plant at least 6 times in the past few years.
The same thing always happen.. brown transluscent spots on leaves, and they got bigger very rapidly by the day and it spread like fire.
The strange thing is that for my case, other type of ferns in the same tank can also catch the 'disease'.
For my case it is so bad that even the rhizome is dead.
So you are not alone.
that basically describes it
even the rhizome dies on me as well
we are not the only ones
i know a couple other hobbyists who have the same experience
and yeah, only the ferns die, all others are totally fine
i never mixed it with other ferns before, so am not sure if it spreads to other fern species
and i can;t make head or tail of whats the problem
so am asking around
i got mine from y618
i did not ask them though... didn't think it would help
to them its just like any other fern type...hardy and easy to keep
and in my experience, the melting starts only after some time in the tank
so any specimens they have probably would not be left unsold and be in the shop's tank long enough for the problem to occur
For my case the same thing always repeat itself.. the fern will propagate and all seem well for some time.
Then one day when I look close enough I will see the problem that starts from the base of the leave. If I do not remove the entire rhizome that day, the next day there will be more trouble.
It also happened to my friend's tank when I passed him some good and seemingly healthy, light green philippines. Almost all his ferns (philippines and otherwise) got wiped out.
Now I still have some remaining philippines in my tank. But for some reason, the surviving plants seemed to be throwing out deformed leaves.
Whereas my NL ferns in the same tank are in perfect condition.
I tell myself that something probably have gone wrong during the cell propagating process in the lab.
my java fern "philippine" is growing fine with no problems. i'm keeping mine at a temp of 25degree with just FL tubes. i used to keep it in a tank running with fan with temp of 26 - 26 and growing fine. i do not dose much of fert. mayb once a week or once every 2 weeks.
But in one of my tanks with a temp of 24 to 25, some of the ferns does have holes and brown leaves but new shoots seems to be sprouting out.
i think that stable water parameters is a important factor for keeping this fern alive.
java fern "philippine" is not as hardy as the other types of java fern as it is very sensitive to water and can die off overnight. It is a hardy plant. Shouldn't be so easy "died" unless rhizome buried!
Where did you bought it? Colourful?
