Hello everyone,
My friend is in Australia doing his Masters in marine biology. He would like to research on a few types of ornamental marine fishes and their food.
I am helping him to gather answers for his questions in his research. Here are the questions:
What types of marine fishes do people commonly buy?
Which types of marine fish can spawn in captivity?
Your answers are greatly appreciated,
Wayne Wah

1) Mostly reef safe fishes are bought by aquarist. However, if aquarist are setting up a FOWLR ( Fish Only With Live Rock ), they either go for the angels species or a predator tank. Reef safe fishes are those that do not harm or consume coral or even eat each other fish and will NOT outgrow the tank. A reef tank is usually a tank that has more coral to fish number.
2) Cardinalfish, damselfish including clownfish, yellow and neon goby are a few that I know of.
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.
Don't walk behind me as I might not lead, don't walk in front of me as I might not follow. Walk beside me, as my friend.
Mohamad Rohaizal is my name. If it's too hard, use BFG. I don't mind.

Spawn in captivity includes Flame angel, cherub pygmy angel, threadfin cardinals and other types of cardinals, neon goby, clownfishes and also mandarin fishes. As for the survival of fries, its quite hard unless it is in a species tank.
As for fishes that are commonly bought, its a long long list. I agree with BFG that most reef safe fishes are brought into the marine trade industry for retail.
