All, I came across a shop (KK at Tampines Blk 200+) selling a pack of stuff that clains to stop algae by removing phosphate. Can be used in the tank or filter.

    Selling at $1.50.

Anyone has any idea on the effectiveness and side effect ?

    Thks.

    Hi Peter,

$1.50 is cheap to try but I think nutrient control is more important for planted tanks. Phosphates are also used by plants as Phosphorus is a major nutrient. Removing them totally is also not good for plant growth.

Try to figure out the causes of algae in your tank. Can start by reading the Estimative Index by Tom Barr.

    Cheers!

Removing Phosphates will do exactly the opposite. Plants will suffer without Phosphorous, which is a macro nutrient needed. Maybe reduce it or even better, balance it out with Nitrates dosing )see juggler's EI link), so your plants have an abundant supply.
    I'm back!
