I am thinking of buying a Eden 501 type of filter which I think is quite popular in this aqua hobby.

Daveteogh, I believe all are as nearly identical to the other. They may go with different name but will still operate the same if not lesser than the other. So it's your choice in which one to go for. I've gone with the Eden 501 and only discovered that there are other brand that may look similar to it. I did not pursue to do a comparison as I am quite happy with what I currently have.

I did some comparison before I buy and I found that the Eden 501 has the highest flowrate (at that time last year). Most looks or functions are quite identical. So it boils down to flowrate and price if you ask me.

i'm using the Resun Cyclone that's a clone of the eden 501, but with a flowrate of 200l/hr instead of 300l/hr...it's serving my 1ft cube very well...silent and efficient
I ended up buying a Eden 501 from Petmart today
I choose this because it has good reviews, low wattage of 5W and 300L/hr flowrate
I installed it this evening and I will say it is really quiet and its good for my bedroom 1.5ft planted tank
The price is quite good...

Good buy! I was user for Eden 501 before I upgraded to bigger tank. Resales value also not bad ..

I am sure we can use 2 Edens for a larger tank. Since each can support up to 60L tank, having 2 Edens will make it 120L naturally.
Problems are more pipes and hose tubes... and the need to have 2 electrical sockets for 2 Edens to work at the same time.
At the price of 2 Edens, buy a eheim filter

I am quite interested in getting a 2nd hand cannister filter and do not know wat to look out for... Minimum recommended flowrate for a 2ft tank? Any other things to note?

I use Eden 501 for my 1 footer & feel that it is just nice. I'm quite sure that it will be underpower for a 2 footer. I'm using Eheim 2232 in my 2 footer (quite heavily planted) & inline with an internal CO2 reactor. I ended up adding a separate pump connected to a rainbar to improve circulation.
As for flow rate required, I always use 5x the volume of the tank per hour (not taken into consideration equipment to be connected inline to the filter).
Let's hear what others have to say about the flow rate.

Recommended flowrate for a planted aquarium is 3x the water volume per hour. So you need to calculate your water volume. You can use our aquarium calculator (link at top right of the page).
As uklau mentioned, buy slightly higher to compensate for other equipment attached inline with the filter, like CO2 reactors.
Also buy higher flowrate because:
1. Flowrate drops over time due to clogging of filter media and normal wear and tear.
2. You won't need to buy a new filter if you upgrade to a bigger tank in the future. Good filters last many years.
You can always reduce the flow by adjusting the valve of the filter output.
Filters produce heat and use electricity and have to run 24/7 unsupervised, so I strongly recommend that you spend more and get a reliable and safe brand like Eheim. You wouldn't want to get a call that you home burnt down because an unreliable and unsafe filter failed, overheated and started a fire. (It's happened before when cheap filters flooded the market during the louhan craze.)

Oh icic, I never used cannister before. And i want to reduce the amount of electricity (going green) used for the tank by cutting the equipment (airpump,water pump and etc) used.
Sorry if it is a stupid question haha, just bumping around to see if there are innovative way to use 1 equipment for mulitple benefits. Thanks for input.
