No base fertilizer. What fertilizer to recommend ?

Hi folks,

I only use fine gravel for my 2 ft tank. It's about 9 mth old by now. I've used those fertilizer sticks before but it melted and created a mess whenever I uprooted my plants. And it even contributed to BBA growing on the gravel.

Any slow release fertilizer to recommend, the est. cost and where to get it ? I've heard of the 7-ball (???) type but not sure what it is.
