help! my aquarium is infested with red gello like algae.

first, it started appearing in sploges on the sand. tried to physically remove these, but its still there.

now its gone onto the corals. have tried to clean this off the coral but still there.

have changed water 2 times too, have held back food...what else can I do? is there a special chemical treatment for this? help!!!

    Hi,

Could it be cyanobacteria? Try measuring your water parameters - if Si, PO4, and nitrites/nitrates are too high cyanobacteria are prone to appear.

could be....but shouldnt they go away if I change water and if I abstain from feeding for a period? is there any other way to remove these?

    hI,

You could try using chemi-pure sponge, it worked wonders for me last time. Try to decrease photoperiod for a while even. There's an anti-cyanobacterial product out there, at $30+ bucks, but seriously I wouldn't risk adding any medication to my reef tank. Some animals are also reputed to have an appetite for c-bac, but I dunno if they are available in Singapore. The only area where c-bac appears in my tank is around my tube anemone (on the sand), where the cleaning animals can't get to, so perhaps either the cucumbers, hermits or snails may help.

    Gd luck!

    Regards,
    Hong Yee
