Fully agreed with you. However, those with moss in the tank cannot utilise these algae crew .

    hello -

this is from an absolute novice.

i had huge amount of hairy algae plus the water itself was was almost opaque green, due to some other algae and bacteria. this is what i did:

    1. introduced some floating plants (don't know the name) which soaked up nutrients
i also yanked out some of the java ferns that was the breeding ground
    2. reduced light to 4 hours and introduced CO2
    3. i use a long bottle-brush to catch the hairy algaes
    4. introduced 6 Ottos & a bunch of black mollies (my tank is 5 ftx2ftx18inch)

    Results:
    1. the tank is crystal clear - no greenish primordial look
    2. hairy algae is reduced by 80% - i still 'bottle-brush' my tank plants
    3. started ferts - and hence my plans are now vibrant and they soak up nutrients

Still some problems and i need HELP!
    1. most of the plant leaves are covered with very minute and small white hairs - which looks velvety. how do i get rid of this?

    thanks in advance!

Sorry to dig out old thread, I had been reading all threads regarding algae. Many claimed that Yamatoes is the best to cure this problem, but some did mentioned that Yamatoes will weck CRS shrimplet.

    Please advise.

    Regards,

Can malayan shrimps work better than yamatos? So what is the ratio to keep them(both malayan and yamatos) in my 4ft tank?

You see, more and more long hairy alage started sprouting every where especially on my DW. It grew on the DW and my Christmas mosses like hair grow from the mole!

My yamatos(5pcs) arent enough to clear them, some disappear! I guess my 2pairs of orange Aphyosemion australe might had those MIA yamatos for their dinner

Can I use Excel to clear them?
    cheers

5 pieces of yamatos aren't enough for a 4ft tank. what i did with my tank when i was facing hair algae problems was to buy a bag of 100 malayan shrimp for $6 and dump them into my tank. the shrimp mostly ended up being discus food, but they did their job well enough before being eaten. 6 months after the 100 were thrown in, i still see a couple appear every now and then when i'm doing my weekly water change. i'd recommend you do the same eddie cheap and good algae crew which doubles up as a long term source of fish food too!

Hey Illumnae, where did you bought your malayan shrimp?
Can you please post the address for me?

Actually, a few months ago, i put in 50pcs or yamatoes. But, after a few weeks, i could not see where these yamatoes are hiding!
Its been 3 mths now and i think the yamatoes have gone AWOL!

Will malayan shrimp eat up flame moss and christmas moss?

    Thanks

    Hi Laikratong,

I notice you are not Singapore, do you live here? Do you need the address for C328? It's a local fish store situated in Clementi.
