    hi,

The malayan shrimp die easily? I brought 50 previously before another 10 xl yamato. Currently think i left with 10++.... Wonder why?

I must say yamato is still the best. All my ha on my moss gone but a small portion of taiwan my moss also gone.... i find these guys are strong and good stirrer, they tend to stir up dirt from my sustract so my exp tell that dont buy the xl, go with the small size will do.

Now i have to buy a suspend display tank to keep them so that they dont destroy my moss and also stir dirt from the ground... Just like jailing them everyday 2 yamato go and enjoy in the tank while the rest in suspend tank. Hope they learn their lesson and behave themselve while in freedom

My tank probably infected for half a year with green hair algae (or thread algae). And there's no more Yamatos in there to do the job. I thought I can try nutrient & fertilisation control, CO2 increase etc but problem did not go away. Each week I see the same amount of algae needed to be removed during water change.

Finally no choice but to resort to the Yamatos which has worked for me in the past. I threw in 20 large sized ones in my 3.5ft tank and after two weeks, it looks like I need not remove algae at my next water change any more.

    Moral of the story:
    1) sometimes no choice but to assign the job to the best person (shrimp in this case).
    2) stick to what has work well before.

It's a higher form of algae in which it means it will grow well in conditions that are great for plants (lots of CO2, nutrients and light) once induced. Killing it off via pruning is essential to get rid of it while maintaining good conditions would prevent it from coming back. You cannot expect it to die off by giving good plant conditions though.

Guys, where would you recommend to get yamatoes (preferably young ones) at reasonable price? Thanks.

I used to get my regular supply from PetMart in Serangoon North Ave 1. Prepacked in bags of 20 shrimps. Hopefully same reasonable price after all these years.

C328 also have prepacked in smaller bags of 10 shrimps.

My latest batch I happen to chance upon them at Yishun Aquastar. Not always available there. Can call them to check.

So,seem like Yamatos is still the best compare to Taiwan shrimp for clearing hair algae. Sad for me as still dare not mix yamatos with CRS.

Agreed. Yamatos still the better option than other shrimps in removing green hair algae. But they are quite expensive compared to malayan or taiwan shrimps. It's best not to mix yamatos with crs. Yamatos are big smart bullies. They tend to snatch away food pellets from smaller shrimps and each one of them will usually grab one pellet and carry the food elsewhere to feed by itself. I'm sometimes annoyed by this behaviour, but also can't help thinking how smart they can be. Somehow over time, my team of 20 yamatos has shrunk to about 2-3. So I'm preparing to get another 10-20 of them.

Are you sure the babies are yamatos? Based on my understanding, yamato babies require blackish/sea water to survive. Perhaps you may try to transfer the babies into a blackish tank? There are a few thread discussions on breeding yamatos...Do a search and share with us your experience if you will.

p/s: Oops..sorry fellas, seems like we have discussed beyond the topic.
