    hi steven

forgot to tell u tt i did not test the DIY bottle tt i passed to u. shld not be any leakage cos i put in an amount of silcon on both side.

btw,is yr check valve connect correctly? also test the btl for leakage at the same time.

i think 1/2 teaspoon of yeast & 1/2 baking soda is quite alot which will dry out the co2 production very soon. can try 1/4 teaspoon instead when doing yr next mixture.

hi justjoin! Thanx for your riccia and DIY bottle. I got so tired of trying to make the yeast mixture so I just went along and got myself a CO2 setup. Now the thing is working beautifully, simple, clean and nice.

    Thanx again!

Would like to find out from you guys about 2 things.

    1) My ceramic diffuser does not seem to have bubbles going through all the holes, but only 1-2 holes. Is that okay? This is when i set to 2 bubbles per second. If I full blast it then bubbles will come thru all the holes.

    2) Currently I have a 1x36W PL light at 6500K. I asked an LFS whether they sell PL lights cos I was looking for more opinions. They suggested strongly against PL lights cos they said will develop algae. Issit true? They said to get FL lights instead.

Please advice cos I'll be going to get another 2 ft light tomorrow. Either PL or FL, I can't decide.

actually i got my stuff separately cos i wanted to do my DIY, so initially i got bubble counter and check valve and diffuser, all these can get at standard price at most lfs.

1.5 L CO2 canister costs $90 and Manual Regulator costs $50 but I got everything at $120 at Generation X. Also got some accesories but never charge me at all.

However, they sell the set there at $150 as in everything thrown in. But if you try hard, maybe be able to bargain...

dawn, DIY isnt always cheaper.. go to the thread on DIY lights started by Juggler, he has some calculation of his expenses.. u see what i mean...

2ndly, for the money u gotta spend and unless u got certain constraints which really require u to DIY.. offshelf is 'almost' the same

    DIY gives u personal satifaction..[]

    Agreed with simon.

I got no choice but to DIYed a 1 X 18watt PL at the following cost just to fit in to my 1.5ft hook:
(If tank is open concept, better to get off-the-shevle

    1]AEC 18watt tube at $6.50
    2]1 X E-ballast 20 watt at S$15
    3]2 x light clip $2
    4]single cord wire 1m $1 (cutted into 4 pcs)
    5]2 x wire connector $0.60

No additional cost on the following cos found in storeroom or salvage fr ..:
    1]reflective sticker
    2]light holder
    3]screws
    4]3 pin plug with cable

Satisfaction is there but time wasted on travel to get materials & DIYed the stuff.

PL and FL should have the same characteristic. However due to the compact design of PL, the lighting is more intense. With good nutrient control, algae won't be a problem.
    Cheers!!

Thanx for your reply! I went and got another PL light, now having 72Watts of PL light.

My liquid fert i only use half dosage so as to monitor the algae growth temporarily.

Also got myself 3 cherry shrimps to clear out some algae and a puffer(temporary resident) to eat up the snails.

Btw, I had been running on 36W and CO2 for about 7 hours today then when I added another 36W my riccia started bubbling!!!

    Yeah!

Got my cherry shrimps at $1 a piece from Nature Aquarium.

    My lighting costs $39 x 2 = $78 but got about 2-3 bucks discount.
