Dear pple, I'm a newbie at fish-keeping so I'll probably need help. I've recently bought a 5-tier JEBO 809 ext can filter. It comes with big ceramic rings, smaller rings, sintered glass, foam and carbon. The question is: which should go to the top and which goes to the bottom? Does the aquarium water get filtered as it travels down the filter or up back to the tank? pls help. thanks.

external filters have water flow from bottom to top
the bigger, coaser media go below and biological media on top

    refrain from using carbon

they give a false sense of security and ppl tend to think they can get away with carbons coz "carbons remove all the bad stuff in the water"
    true, but to small extent.

other things to take note with canisters...
    (1) make all hose lengths as short as possible ...ESPECIALLY outlet (the part where water gets pumped back into tank) hose as short as possible. This is to minimise frictional losses. (thus inefficiency)

    (2) inlet and outlet placed as far apart as possible..for the best circulation you can have

    (3) Minimise all elbow, fittings etc. Also to minimise frictional loss.

    (4) dont have kinks (or sharp bending) in the hose.

    (5) place at recommended height ...dont put too high or too low with respect to tank.

THose frictional losses i talked abt..are ignored by most.
But the losses can be staggering.

Thanks DEA and lsz, will do all that. Just outta curiosity what are frictional loss - does it mean we lose water or power? I know carbon will only be effective in the first month or so, before the bio bac settles in the media. thinking of using a UVC or UVS.

    Thanks again for your help.

the frcitional losses i was talking abt is the loss of flowrate and thus efficiency by the pump of the filter.

we will want to avoid giving more work and obstacle for the filter to overcome....we want it to do its real work as much as it can.

(although it was stated a filter has got flowrate of xxx Litres/hr , in actual situation it is all diff depending on design of filter and setup. Lousy filters even with high flow ratings will lose out to those good ones with an lower one... )

Just one more question: The coarse filter - should I put it at the bottom as a mech filter before the water gets pumped thru the ceramic rings (Lyout 1)
or let the water get channelled into various streams first by the ceramic rings then the coarse filter, finally the fine filter (Layout 2):

    Layout 1 Layout 2

    xxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxx fine floss xxxxxxxxxxxx fine floss
    +++++++++++++ ++++++++++++
+++++++++++++ sintered glass ++++++++++++ sintered glass
    ooooooooooooo oooooooooooo
ooooooooooooo small rings oooooooooooo small rings
    OOOOOOOOOOOOO XXXXXXXXXXXX
OOOOOOOOOOOOO lge rings XXXXXXXXXXXX coasrse floss
    XXXXXXXXXXXXX OOOOOOOOOOOO
XXXXXXXXXXXXX coarse floss OOOOOOOOOOOO large ceramic rings

Thanks a lot for your help. Sorry for the text-diagram - that's the best I can draw now

sorry! the pic came out the wrong way. just put things simply:

    Layout 1:

    fine floss
    sintered glass
    small ceramic rings
    large ceramic rings
    coarse floss

    Layout 2:

    fine floss
    sintered glass
    small ceramic rings
    coarse floss
    large ceramic rings

    Layout 3:
    fine floss
    coarse floss
    sintered glass
    small ceramic rings
    large ceramic rings

    Thanks again. *phew*

    Eheim manuals usually show this:

    Fine floss
    Sintered glass
    Coarse floss
    Ceramic Rings

I think Ceramic rings at the bottom makes more sense as you'll want the water flow to be spread out before it goes thru any filter media.

Coarse floss below sintered glass to prevent clogging of the fine spaces between the sintered glass. Plus decomposing material stuck in the sintered glass encourages a different kind of bacterial to grow which will quickly replace the bacteria we want. Details here

Fine floss over the sintered glass for fine filtering and also prevent small particles of sintered glass to pass thru.

    Just my guess...

Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

It's what Eheim calls EhfiSubstrate. Looks like pieces of broken rocks. There cheaper unbranded ones too.
