Nope.
They are just common names that originated when the rams are bred in Holland or Germany. Now, most of them comes from Malaysia or Singapore.

What about Bolivian Rams? They are a different species, right?
And Butterfly Rams refer to which species?
Nowadays, there's also Balloon Rams referring to dwarf hybrid versions of the German Rams.

Bolivian rams are the common name for Mikrogeophagus altispinosus.
German and holland rams are Mikrogeophagus ramirezi.
If I am not wrong, Butterfly ram is also Bolivian ram. Not very sure about it.
Balloon rams are purposed breeding to create the rams into the round round ballooned up shape, where all the intestines and internals of the fish is squeezed up into a much smaller cavity than its natural form.
which means balloon rams are something like deformed pieces?

No, not 'something like'. They ARE deformed. I wish man could just learn to appreciate nature as it is and stop trying to change it for their own amusement.
Vincent, I thought the butterfly ram is another common name for the Mikrogeophagus ramirezi?
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
but i find that the original german rams are already beautiful enough. why come out with balloon rams? they don't look as nice as the original in my humble opinion. sad case.

some people like round-round
It is just selective breeding, not that the breeder geneticly altered or feed special food or add some chemical to make it round.
i see... but will this selective breeding affect the hardiness of the fish?
-clint- ~apisto keepers unite!~
my personal experience is that balloon rams are not as hardy as the normal form...however, this might not be due to inbreeding. after all, with all your stomach and guts squished into a smaller cavity, i'm sure you wouldn't feel too healthy either![]()
A very clear difference between German and Holland Ram is on the price. German ram always fetch a higher.
Seems like all the German breed have higher price. Is that correct?
The problem is Singapore farm bred rams (as with other contries like Czech etc) are also called German/Holland ram. So when you refer to German/Holland ram, where exactly does the fish come from?
Consider this, German rams imported from German vs. German rams from other countries vs Holland rams imporated from Holland vs. Holland rams from other countries.
So price may not indicative unless you know the exact origin of the fish in question. Which begs the question, what is the price of the Holland ram from Holland? I have never seen one from Holland before.![]()
No scientific or physical difference? No conclusion?![]()
FND, your question is pretty vauge, care to elaborate?
The different fishes from different countries/farms have differences in colour and certain physical traits (e.g. balloon, size, long-finned).
However, the names German/Holland are now being used as a common term interchangeably for these fishes (even for those from Czech, Hong Kong and Singapore), regardless of colour or physical traits.
The only one certain conclusion is that, they are all M. ramirezi.
If you are asking about where these fishes come from based on colour/physical traits, it is then a different question from the topic on how to differentiate German and Holland rams. Are you actually asking about this instead?
Out of topic, would it be possible for balloon rams to have longish offspring? or maybe the DNA that make them longish have gone due to selective breeding?
Good question Robert.
I have the feeling that the short body trait is fixed, so their offsprings would be the same. But this would need confirmation from those who have bred them before.
I have not read anything relating to this yet, or maybe I am not looking hard enough.
Is there any online resources can i can check out information about german and holland rams?
