Yes, you could give them away, but for those that are not may not know how "uncute" the puffer is when keeping with other fishes.
Now, that is exactly the common misconception of new aquarists. Those commonly found bigger puffers ARE indeed brackish water puffers.
They are possibly kept in freshwater at the LFS due to the projected fast turnover. However, when kept too long in freshwater, they are prone to all kinds of disease and problems, which is why you often see them not doing too well eventually in the LFS.
Take some time to read the section on puffers of the brackish water FAQ.

The larger ones like Spotted Puffers (Tetraodon nigroviridis) and Figure of Eight (Tetraodon biocellatus) are brackish water puffers.
The even larger ones, Fahaka (Tetraodon lineatus), Mbu (Tetraodon mbu) and Congo (Tetraodon miurus) are freshwater puffers but will get too large and isn't planted tank friendly.
Only two are truly freshwater, stay relatively small and suitable, i.e. dwarf puffer (Carinotetraodon travancoricus) and South American puffer (Colomesus asellus) but the latter shimpment is very infrequent.
Edit: Apologies to Caesar for dragging this off topic.
