God will make a way, where there seems to be no way
hmmm...hard to see, got clearer picture?![]()
can they be differentiated by their finage??
Look at the black spot on the body.
Do you see blue inside the black or just clean black spot with blue around it?
If there is blue inside the flank spot, it is female. Else it is male.
Finnage is not accurate. Red belly only when it is sexually matured.
I see. Sorry for misleading.

is it better to have more female than male or more male than female??

wilson, you are not wrong. That is one of the many ways to sex them. Just that it is some times not very accurate as young females don't have the red belly.
If I didn't remember wrongly, they are monogamous. Meaning they have only one sex partner. But think there should be no harm in having two females and one male. Once a pair is formed, the other female got to be taken out to prevent it from being killed if your tank is small.

I see... is there any other way to tell a female from a male other than the above 2 methods??

I used to use the length of the 2 ray of the dorsal as a gauge. But recently I proved myself wrong when my mature pair have equally long dorsal fins! Shorter is female and longer is male. But then, seems like no longer accurate.
thats what i used to gauge when i bought mine too...
thought its the same as apistogramma..
I got 3 males and 1 female previously and it was interesting to see them fight. They are pushing each other using mouth, it is like kissingAfter a while 2 of the males keep hiding chased by the pair. So I move them to my colleague office tank.
He is having ball ramsin i am not wrong.
Taking a picture of the side view should help.
The sexing of balloon rams or normal rams shouldn't differ, unless the breeders mutant the fish so much that even sexual characteristics are modified.
