Hi !!
My ram breed again!!
Previous 2 times I have Yamato, platy inside, fries gone...
This time can see lots of fries swimming around..
Tankmate 1 oto to feed on algea.
Report goes here:
16/9/2007 Sunday night, all of them are free swiming around the parents... and the parents took turns to petrol the tank to hunt for lost fries, pick them up in the mouth and put them back with the group.
17/09/2007 Monday morning went to check on the fries again.. and to my suprised I can't find them... then after close inspection, found most of them hidding among the plants and near the surface of the gravels.. maybe too dark the parents cannot find the babies as they are all scattered in the tank..
17/09/2007 Monday night went home checked still have quite a lot of them and they are back in a group. feed them BBS, can see some of them attack the BBS.
18/09/2007 Tuesday morning on light check, cannot see the fries... a bit sad.. but after a while check again, found a few fries.. think they are all scattered again.
will update again tomorrow.. :>
attached is a video of the parents and babies!
enjoy!!

All my fries was gone after 3rd day of free swimming. The second spawn which is very recenly, the fries are also gone after 3rd day of free swimming
Hopefully you have better luck than me.
Thank you bro...
hope that next spawn they will last longer till old age..
btw, what other fishes you have inside your tank?
Congrats bro!
You are certainly lucky when it comes to breeding things! First pleco spawn, now rams spawn. You also spawn one walking talking one! Wonder what you going to spawn next? Turtles?

maybe the Cory taken the fries?
you have corry in your tank also?
something in common fries gone on 4th day and corry in the tank. Could it be related?
The problem maybe attributed to bad parenting but another possibility would be insufficient feeding or choking on food. My observation so far with rams is that whenever the parent's unable to herd the fries together they tend to take the easy way out by cannabalising the adventurous ones. So when the whole batch of fries are not under controlled i.e. scattered, later the parents will treat them as from other breeding pairs and starts to wallop.
I have noticed that newly hatched fries were unable to take even microworms until the 2nd/3rd week. So feeding bbs might be choking the fries. Or the fries are dying of starvation because they cannot eat bbs and there's insufficient infosuria present in the tank to sustain them.
This observation are based on a few pairs of my 'just matured' rams. I am not sure about the size of the eggs when they are fully matured as bigger eggs yield bigger fries. But my guess would not be far off as full grown adult rams can spawn up to 600 eggs at any one time and mine laid about 200 eggs which correlated with the body size of the female.
Interesting observations, at least some food for thought for them to consider and try. Perhaps, a large amount of infusoria culture would really help during the first couple of weeks.
There seems to be no general concensus on the food that can be taken by the fries versus the time frame, with very different accounts from the various aquarists, very confusing indeed.
Ah, speaking of which, there is something which I meant to ask but didn't manage to do so. Are the fries of balloon variants of smaller size than the normal ones? From the photos and naked eye, this is not easily distinguishable. Anyone?
no other fish in my tank except an oto...
humm... should I remove the parents then... does the fries need the parents after they are free swimming? thinking of removing the parents if I see fries next time...
i raised a batch of apisto cacatuoides fry away from their parents since day 2 of free swim...had 50% survival rate. not sure what it's like with rams though
