I have a low tech planted tank that has foam(like soap bubbles) appearing occasionally on the surface. It does not go away until I do a partial water change. It does not bother the fauna either. Any idea what causes it?

What are the parameters of your water? I experience that once and found out that there's too much decaying things decaying in the tank then. It comes with a 'smell' too...

It is probably layer of oil surface produced by plants when they do photosinthesis. You can add some guppy to eat it

You are talking about the protein layer? On second thought, it could be air bubbles that get trapped it?

do we need a protein skimmer in this case to remove the layer ?
Is guppy a good solution as suggested above ?
    I have the same problem.

I encountered the same problem in my tank. Have to scoop up the top layer of water once in 3 days and top up the tank with water. Tired of doing this chore at least 2 to 3 times a week. I do not want to add another kind of fish (guppy) in my tank to get rid of this problem.
Think of getting a skimmer although it it would partly affect the CO2 in my planted tank.

yes surface skimmer will solve the problem as well, it probably effect CO2 very little if not none.

No idea why did I suggest guppy, my mind was probably thinking of small 1ft tank project where you do not have space to install surface skimmer . But Guppy and endler did work, used that on my low tech 2 ft tank. My low tech have no filter.

Protein skimmer can be very expensive, I suggest you used surface skimmer that connects to your filter outlet.

did you checked your ammonia level. I experience something similar and all my fish(about 200 neon) died within 3 days. i did a check and discover that it was ammonia over dose or what some people say ammonia spike. Anyway, that happened many years ago to my 3 feeter...

Protein skimmer usually used for marine. For planted, surface skimmer is sufficient and it is connected to inlet not outlet. Maybe there is but never see outlet surface skimmer yet.

I do saw at C328 hang on back filter with surface skimmer. Otherwise you can always DIY.

hang on back filter? I am currently using 2211. The smallest i seen is Ista brand. I still think its looks pretty odd in a 1ft cube. Think I will just add some nice guppy.

i encounter the same problem everytime i setup a new tank. normally i will add a surface skimmer to do the job, also can add swordtail to eat those stuff but i found a new method which is to add floating plants like duckweed and frogbit. after the floating plants start growing those stuff just disappear mysteriously. tried twice and it works like magic maybe you can give it a try.

can any bros here explain this to me? it really puzzle me cause after i remove those floating plants the water surface still remains clear.
