I started from begining of July 07, but within 2 weeks HC all melted because i bought the emersed type HC.
Then i use the remaining spare HC which i float them on the other tanks and restart again at end of July. So it takes about 2 months to spread.

Here is the amount i planted 1 weeks after for the second attempt. If converted to pots maybe around 5 or 6 pots.

Got a question to ask. For those who know, I tried to do a similar scape not so long ago but failed miserably. Main reason was the attack of BGA. Because of this attack, I was advised to plant more heavily (from more HC to stem plants) and I did but it still did not work. I aM really curious how come a similar scape like this can be successful. Looking at the tank size and fert regime, its rather simiar. I had 2 24W T5 lights.

Beautiful rock work there.
One nitpick. Maybe one more piece of rock where that void is now to break that "cut-in-the-middle" feeling.
But still great Iwagumi scape. The small amount of HC on that main rock is sweet.

Bigger and tighter schooling fish? Ember tetra (Hyphessobrycon amandae)?

I started off with HC about 2 months ago.
5 hours lighting & CO2 3bps for the initial 2 weeks.
Subsequence weeks increase the lighting period.
1st month growing rate is really slow and some portion of HC melted as well.
I do water change once per week for the 1st 3 weeks.
2nd month can observed that HC started to spread and i switch the lighting period to 8 hours with CO2 2bps.
No special fert regime for me.

Maybe some others can answer your question in more techinical.

Very Nice growth. I been trying to get like these but mine never spread though they still alive. Anything i am missing. I am using Magic Soil bought from colourful aquarium. Any tricks to follow when planting them.

Not consider trick. High light demand i would say for HC.
This is how i do:
Float the HC in tank for a week or more before plant into soil.
Plant them with amount of 5 cent diameter size with tweezer holding the roots slightly insert into soil. Most of the leaves still expose on the soil.
HC roots are very short and very difficult to hold on the soil.
As I do not have fauna on that time, so i can plant them shallow into the soil.
5 hours lighting period for initial week to prevent algae attack. Then observed the condition and once new leaves start growing, you can extended the lighting period week by week.

I dose once per week. 1/3 teaspoon of PO4, 1 teaspoon of KN03 and 5ml of trace.

i am surprised that you dose once a week. I thot it was ideal to dose macros and micros on alternate days respectively.

I dose 1/4 teaspoon of KNO3 and 1/16 teaspoon of PO4 on one day and 8 drops of trace on another day. I then repeat this cycle throughout the week. The total volume of macros added seemed simliar to yours.

My question is more pertaining to the trace. Are you using Lushgro micros?

I was looking at a conversion calculator. 8 drops of trace is about 0.4ml. Assuming i dose 3 times a week, it will be about 1.2 ml which is far from yours. There is a warning on the label that says not to dose more than 10 drops per time but yet you put in 5ml of trace. So is the label wrong?


can someone help comment? I know i am being anal. but i my crpyts keep melting and I suspect it does not have enough trace. I want to add more but anything more than 10 drops seemed 'dangerous'

I'd root for the Ember Tetra as well. Love the way they school. They'll most definitely school in your tank since there's so little cover.

Not everyone goes with the idea of using EI.
What Shrimp has done is to make use of the growth of the plant and then make appropriate dosing. Iwagumi scapes are difficult in the sense whereby, if one thing in the whole equation (lights, CO2, nutrient) goes haywire, it is out. Even with EI. Because EI still falls back to this three components.

For the melting of crypts, nothing to do with trace or what now. Crypts once stabilised wouldn't melt like crazy, unless something in the system changed drastically, like sudden increased in the amount of light.

No harm overdosing trace imho.

Actually i know nothing much about the fert regime....
The amount of the fert i dose was advise by one of my friend....
Yes i am using Lushgro micros.

HC is floating by nature
