Has anyone spotted Badis badis anywhere? I've been looking high and low for these buggers and I always get referred to Dario dario.

This is Badis badis, picture courtesy of CK Yeo.

polyart had a batch of the true badis badis some weeks back, but it was labelled blue badis. i've told the guy there about his error last week and he's since started correctly labelling the dario dario.

Been really scouring high and low for this species...Need to satisfy my hobbyist urge to own some of these beautiful fishes myself!
Are pricing roughly comparable to the scarlet?
I usually get my scarlets from polyart and such for roughly a dollar + each?
Seems like the last sighting for the fish was a few weeks back?
Will need to stake out the place more often from now on!
Hope there are other LFS that carry the fishes?

There was a batch of Badis badis at Polyart a few weeks ago, but when I was there yesterday, there wasn't any of them anymore, only left some Dario dario. Alternatively, you can try your luck at TB Ben (Wu Hu) as I got my fishes from there, but I haven't been there for a while, so I can't confirm if there are any.

Uhm, that is the Dario dario which is not what the thread starter wanted.

Badis badis is blue in colour and grows up to 8cm TL, Dario dario is red in colour and grows up to 2cm TL. They are totally different species.

It is really interesting that even with pictures, they can still get mixed up, so looks like more "promotion" is needed.

Nic, I think that could be just another Badis spp., not Badis badis itself. Any pictures so we can have a look at it?

Edit: Before Dario genus was erected, all similar looking/shaped fish were actually put in the Badis genus, with Dario dario considered to be a subspecies of Badis badis and is named as Badis badis bengalensis.

Other similarly looking but considered different fishes, were also named as subspecies of Badis badis, e.g. B. badis assamensis, B. badis burmanicus, B. badis siamernsis etc until there was a subsequent revision.

These fishes could have been one time or another been referred to as simply B. badis in the past, and this may have caused the confusion.

I am talking about badis burmanicus.

    Did I make a mistake ?

I used to collect a few different specimen.

Nic, see my edited post. It used to be called Badis badis burmanicus, which was subsequently revised as Badis burmanicus.

    BTW, very nice specimen!

    Point noted!

    Learn something new today.

The fish in the picture is taken from RVA website.

But I used to have a few of these with such standard or better.

But all died of old age.

If you have to see any of these in the market, do give me a ring
