Every time when i see someone recommend a place to get stuffs, they will recommend C328. What is so good about the place?

In terms of price, customer service, shop design, cleanliness and other factors, which shop attract you the most?

I went to marine parade yesterday, there is this LFS which has many planted tanks on the shop front, very nice! I like shops that has nice shop layout and nice display tank. But the price are steep.

your question is kind of vague IMO as the many different lfs-es around really each have their own strengths and specialisations

depends really on what do you want and what are you looking for

Hobbyists here are slowly, unknowingly putting many good LFS out of business.

When everyone starts to flock to certain LFS, that particular shop will naturally get better, better in the sense that its stock will move faster, it can sell more hence offer better prices, it can bring in more variety of equipment, fishes and plants because they too will move fast.

At the same time, other LFS will suffer, their livestock may move so slowly that they suffer losses or enjoy only very little profit, eventually owners of these LFS will start to play safe and bring in the more common, more hardly plants / fishes, owners can ill afford to offer discounts due to poor business.

We will then start to label these LFS as 'boring' or 'unfriendly' or 'pricey' and stop visiting them. It is a vicious cycle.

My favourite LFS is a victim of such circumstances.

different fish shops have different stocks and pricing.

so what i feel is that for me, i live in toa payoh and i go to the toa payoh fish shop.
and the auntie knows me, so she sometimes will give a better price.

for other fish shop, some would give advice when you ask, while others knowing that you will not buy alot of stuff from them, would just give a short answer and will not be too happy to serve you. So regarding the customer service, i believe if you are a frequent customer to that shop, they will treat you better compared to those who has gone only once to that shop.

and to what bossteck has said, its very true. so i believe most fish shop will try to bring in many different types of fishes and plants, but if there are no customers, they are the ones who have to make a loss.

I'm over over singapore in terms of what i need.

For new fishes and shrimps, normally i like to visit Y618 and C328.

For equipment will visit Y928 and NA

Fot plants, Teo's and pasir ris uncle

For CO2 top up, will just pass it to my dad...then his boss at startlight will sometimes top up for me FOC....

For fish food, my house downstairs LFS.

so i guess every shop got their own area of specialisation for me.

I live in the east, Siglap, but I travel very often to C328, Y618, NA, Colourful, PasirRis Fish Farm and once in a blue moon to Serangoon North Ave 2 and EcoCulture. And yes I avoid the one at Marine Parade even though it is so close to me, due to my bad experiences with them and also the steep prices.

And I would like to stress that if any LFS is loosing out, it is entirely not the fault of any consumers, but the LFS themself. I mean you are opening a business, how could you blame the consumer for your incompetence in handling your own business? Absurd I would say.

True, and it's those types of shop i'm not too concerned about. What REALLY bothers me is the type that resorts unethical business practices to push out a competitor who refuses to compromise on his/her morals. The kind that sell dyed or injected fish, questionablely branded fishfood, overstock tanks, push any product they can(i've seen a shop in yishun try to sell a kid a baby red tailed cat). then there's guys that pot terrestrial plants and try to sell them as aquatic. And people who around saying canister filters turn Nitrates into Nitrogen gas with their anaerobic conditions.

And while we might never fall for things like that AQ is hardly a good representation of the community. It's pretty safe to say we're the most informed 5%. And even given the insane amounts we spend, i know of some LFS owners who attribute only 30% of their sales to forumers. The rest come from a far larger number of people who just want "Ocean Free fish food, the $2.30 one..."

Mine would be Y618 hands down. Go there every week. Why? It's near, the price is better for me and the people there knows me. I do go to Polyart and C328 once in a while during lunch - near to my office. But usually don't buy the life stock there. Don't know why, but I just don't feel comfortable with their life stocks that's all. Just my personal choice. Not saying that this fish shop is better than another.

for me, i go to polyart and biotope for fish; c328 and NA for equipment/food/other supplies (antichlorine, blackwater etc.); c328 and Colourful and this forum for plants

for fish i go because of quality, equipment/food/others i go because of price and plants i go because of convenience (hard to find plants and ease of ordering specific plants). and for all of the above, also because they take less time for me to travel to from my place.

I think I have to second bossteck on this issue. I have seen bags of 50 tetras going at single digit pricing at some shops most of us here frequent and mind you, this are neons only. I have to admit I am sorely tempted to bow to this temptations of buying them as I always wanted to setup a planted tank with an arrowana and that bag of fish would do nice as colourful feeders.

Perhaps the true question we should be asking ourselves is, what makes a LFS your favourite?

Price? Knowledgable and friendly owners/assistance? Good business ethics? Location? Variety? All the above are on my list of criteria, but they are most certainly not arranged in that order.

That has probably covered about 90% of LFSes in Singapore.

my favourite would be C328 , reason is it sells almost everything i need for my tanks, tanks, lightings, filter, dw and rocks, fish food, substrates like ada and gex brand available and also small equipments like those screw type air valve, which i seldom see LFS selling. i also go there to buy moss, almost weekly after school will go there see got what moss available. although the shop abit squeezy(alot people cause during lunchtime), i like the kind of friendly atmosphere. the aunty there is quite knowledgable i think and despite having so many customers, they not like ignore you or what. got one time i go buy purigen, the uncle even give me discount.
the uncle at NA also quite nice, willing to share info about lightings the first time i go buy for my 3ft tank.also go there for shrimps and rocks.
main thing is the good service if not no matter how big the shop is or how many kinds of equipments you sell, people will not go.
unlike the one near thomson medical centre, i go in and look, the uncle thinks im transparent and just go and entertain another customer who came in later than me

Sorry to side track but this sentence is too true & hilarious . Bro, hebi, its better that he don't speak because if he does you will be in for a shock when he tells you about the prices of his plants.
