    hi guys,

appreciate if u cld help me.
i'm thinking of getting 12x36w pl light with ballast for my future 5x2x2 tank. the price for the light set abt $500++

    my questions are,
    1) is it worth to spend so much on the light set?
    2) 12x36w is it too much based on the size of my tank?

    thks in advance

    1) Give a call to Nature Aquarium and ask for a price. I think you will get a much, much better price. Find the contact in the LFS list (see topmost menu bar), but he's is closed this week until the 11th, inclusive, I think. Other forumer's can confirm the close dates?

    2) It's 3W/G so that's good.

    where do i get 10k PL 36watts?,PL actinics 36watts
& how much do they cost? -do i go nature or kelantan(if got add. better? what's the price diff?
was at kelantan yesterday but all closed. Rest of the shops only had the 36w osram 2980(or 2950) lumens

i spoke to mr liu from pe-we, he recommanded to use tube light if i do not have a chiller.

according to him, less then 200w will be enough for my tank cos the tube light does not contain the "blue spetrum" .. very chim dont really understand.

    any comments from u guys?

blue specturm is cause by the color temperature of a given light tube and not the wattage.. anything above/near to 10000k is bluish, 6500k is an average.. anything lower is yellowish

wats yr tank dimension? 5x2x2?if your's a 5x2x2 is ard 146gal which means u require at least 438watts to get the 3watts per gal, divide that with 36watts (standard PL tubes, 36,55watts)that will be 12x36watts... a 4x36watts only gives u 144watts in total.. even if yr tank is 5x1.5x1.5ft u still require ard 246watts.. i suggest u pay NA a visit, Chan browse in AQ and if u approach him, he will know wat u need.. kkekeee[]

Have read that larger tanks do not really need 3W/G. My tank, 6'x2'x2' ~ 170G is on 432W only ~ 2.5W/G. If you take by actual water volume, 140G, it's 3W/G.

144W flourescent lighting for 5ft is definatle not enuff. IMO, 2X70W of MH is also not even enuff for a 5ft.

MH is a bit hot if you don't have a chiller. But I think fans will do the trick.
    Cheers!!

jus a side discussion, when using MH, the rule of watts per gal doesnt apply so well as using PL/FL...

FL has its limitation of penetration depth, therefore when using in a tank with depth greater than 1.5ft shld be avoided if possible

given the rule of 3watts per gal is a general guide for high light plants and I agree with vinz abt not calculating the volume of the whole tank but just the volume of water than occupies the tank after u filled the gravel and base fert.
