Setting a new Marine tank

HI everyone,

I'm new to marine aquariums. I'm looking for help on setting up a new tank . Looking for a 4 x 2 x 2 with cabinet and a overflow trickle system ( 3x 1.5 x 1.5 )

Any seniors out there can help ? greatly appreciated ..

1) Need to know how much does that cost and where to get ? ( got quote from shop in kelantan rd , $210 for the 4' tank and $120 for the filter tank and $30 for the overflow and drilling hole, but got no cabinet ? )
2) Also lobang for chiller for the 4 ft tank ?
3) What is the difference between over flow system and sump ? []
4) Anyone got a good directions to the marine shop in lor harlus ?
( went by the lor harlus way and there was a barrier down on the lane leading in !!! )

"What is the difference between overflow system and sump"? I think ur are slight confuse here.Normal for a newbie like me self. The sump is the filter tank u mention. Overflow system? Not sure wat u mean but can either be the overflow filter now commonly seen and use for LH tanks but since u mention 4ft tank then I guess u are talking abt the overflow box. U actually need the overflow box, ready-made or DIY to transport water to ur sump. It works on siphon/gravity and also prevent tank overflowing(sump) and draining(main tank) when there is power failure. Also additionally acts as a surface skimmer. Maybe other stuff u not mention is a protein skimmer.Must have. And I recommend u use DSB filteration as well.DSB? Deep Sand Bed - ur sand acts as a filter too.DSB is for long term coz u cannot add DSB filteration later without re-doing.Though u can do a DSB for ur sump, the surface area of ur main tank is huge. Live-rock another form of filteration. So maybe u research more b4 buying anything yet. But my advise is to give extra attention to the type of filter system to use. A combination of all is ok too.

i was offered a 4x 1.5 x 2 tank (10mm) overflow and filter tank of 2.5 x 1.3x 1.5 and a black cabinet with 3 doors for 800 bucks ... all in ... ( with transport and valve piping connection

Anyone think it is X ?

hi again ,

i would like to know if you were to use DSB , that would mean that you need to have a under gravel system in the setup , right ?.... anyone knows where i can get a good undergravel plate ... ones that lasts ...

alternatively , i can do away with that and have a fine layer of sand in the 4 ft tank and have a sand bed in the filter tank ...

also , planning to get :
1) a protein skimmer ,
2) chiller ( 2nd if possible )
2) lighting ( any recommendations .... where can get 10K lights or ML )
anyone got recommendations?

Think you got mixed up......

DSB and got NOTHING to do with undergravel filterationg.

Using undergravel was the norm in the past, but there are a few out there who uses it.

DSB uses NNR method to control the water parameters.

Well,

if you just leave your undergravel plate there then you would have something like a plenum! It is however more tedious then adsb in terms of setup.

there are 2 school of thoughts here..

one, to stack the rocks prior to putting on sand..
second, sand first, then stack the rocks..

IMO, it is up to u..

My 2 cents....

If you are placing sand first, then rocks, would recommend that you build a LR rack holder to support the rocks....

As rocks placed directly on the sand would cause it to be compacted ... and create dead areas...

For lightings, MHs are the best (esp for hard corals) and also provided you have a chiller.....

If you are a little short on budget, like I am and plan to use fans (evaporation rates very high) , then Power compacts would be good...go for the 10000k bulbs...

Also, you mentioned 10000K lights .... what is it ? different from FL ?
how much for a pair .... think must get a blue and a white ? advice pls ....

LR holders... anything that LR can be place on without breaking.
To prevent LR from resting on the SB so as not to compact the sand...might cause dead areas leading to hydrogen sulphide gas formation...

How... basically eggcrates... pvp pipings or even plastic baskets inverted .... one LFS even use a small plastic stool!!!![]
like I said.. the idea is to prevent the LR from resting directly on the SB..
More natural approach... put small rocks on bottom then place the bigger LR on them...

10 000k comes in FL and also Power compacts...(36 or 55 Watts)

Price range differ according to brand.. Coralife 36 W $50 plus 55W $75 plus...
alternatives aqualux 55W around 30 plus... can check with marine LFS... they should carry this brand...
