    hi there, im starting a 2ft marine tank. i got 5kg of coral sand and managed to get a thickness of abt 1" bed. the tank is in my room and can get as low as 21 deg with aircon up to 25 when aircon off. will there be any problems. rite now, the tank is empty and running the filter for 2 days, sg at around 1.023 . will be getting 1 or 2 fishes to help cycling. will that be fine? thanks

    Sounds good so far. Will you be getting any live rock? cos if you are, then you might want to use LR to cycle the tank instead of fish (Which was what I did ...), since the first fish you will probably be getting to cycle the tank will be the hardier ones like damsel, which may become a nuisance and you'll find the little pests hard to catch (happened to my previous tank! The silly green wrasse - arghh ... had to dig everything up to catch him!)

    I dunno where you can get live sand, seriously. You might want to ask some of the marine shops if they will sell you the "grunge" left behind in their live rock tanks - these work very well as well. In fact all of my present sandbed fauna came from LR and perhaps a small percentage from stuff I caught from the sea.

    If you're going to rely on the sandbed for some of the denitrification you might want to make it thicker - 2.5" to 3" would be ok for a 2-footer; any more than that will compromise your viewing space.

    Do let me know if you need any help - like a scoop of sand from my tank to innoculate yours or something - will be glad to help!
