This is definitely an interesting sub forum profile. Nice initiative. But I find that it's better to keep it as close thread so that it's not meant for discussion but more like a cichlids profile lookout.

Perhaps with an open thread, people can discuss about their experiences with the particular species, which would be better.

True. Totally agree. But maybe that could be discuss in the main cichlids forums. Otherwise you will see people posting comments like nice fish which is not much of a help or contradicting views. And there would be no difference or a very thin line that separates the main and this initiative. I was thinking more like a profile cichlids book where maybe people want to id or find just the basic information of the fish.

Interesting comments. So I've moved it out and put a poll to it as well. Give us your input!

The outcome will decided if the profile will be open for comments as well.

    Thanks guys!

Wow this is cool. One moment we were discussing whether we should allow postings and within minutes there's a poll. Really efficient moderators.
Back to the topic, i vote for open for discussion, but only allow postings which are informative such as experiences with the fish.

Don't forget, nothing is set in stone for profiles. Sometimes, they have to be updated. Take for example, Convicts are recently reclassified. So all the previous profiles and literature will actually need to be updated.

Then, there are variations of the same species, which does not warrant a separate species profile. And there are also location variations to consider too.

    I'm fine with closed too.

But here are my views. Same species but different variations or localities will also be included.

But with regards to changing classification, maybe have a remark that says if anyone has updates on the species will pm moderator with the backing information. And mod will make changes accordingly.(more work for genes). But still moderators will need to check regularly on all the comments made if it's open. So in some sense actually lesser work.

Not sure if this is a viable option but just throwing some ideas here.

Keep the profile clear of discussion, but end each profile with a link to another thread called "Discussion about this species". It could be an empty 'starter' post which contain simple statement like, this thread is for discussion on the XYZ cichilid.

    Can be done?

There are always split discussions on a specie, so i think it may be difficult to link everything under a single thread.

I would vote for an open thread. Being open, more information can be found in a single thread, which means less hassle when browsing. However, thread may become "out of point" as mentioned by leeruisheng. But post that are off topic can always be removed.

i agree with eugene. the profile contains essential information, but sometimes what hobbyists are looking for are personal experiences from other hobbyists, and instead of searching through many different threads looking for relevant information, just having 1 thread to read through about the fish you're looking up is much more convenient.

Yup maybe there can be strict guidelines along which the moderators can monitor the fish profiles?

I think its good to have the fish profile along with people's experience with the fish, it gives good reference to people....further discussions should be separated from personal experiences

I vote that the sub folder to be open for discussion. My suggestion is for the folders to be named according to the various species. Through the inputs of forumers' personal experience, along would come essential information. Via reading through thread after thread of that particular speciment. The reader should have gathered sufficient knowledge. Of couse, essential notes can be made sticky by the mods either in the general folder or the sub folders.

Yes. It can be done. Each profile can be linked to a permenant thread in the Cichlid section for further discussions.

From the reaction so far, it seems that most of the folks here would like to openly discuss about the said species. So Bossteck's suggestion is actually quite good to maintain proper housekeeping as well as to foster discussion.

My ideal would be that the profiles can be contributed by anybody, and once it is created in the open section, it will be shifted into the profiles sub forum. Anybody can also add to this profile as well. But discussion should be kept separate from the profiles as experiences differ with different setups.
