Paul, I wonder how your fries get through the nights in darkness? Any casualties? Try to get a less-intense light and place it directly at where the fries are stationed. For mine, they seem to shift their holding positions every few hours. Once the main lights go off, they are more or less scattered and the parents will be busy gathering them together. It took me a while to set up the dim light, in which I witnessed a fry, which had wondered off, being gobbled up by my Vietnamese White cloud minnow. That's why after the 1st night off, I learnt through this mistake. Switch on the dim light before the main lights are off.
Celtifish,
Yeah I tried your method last night and it seemed to work - except that I was scared of being pricked by the fierce parent rams that my hand jerked and splashed everywhere! I wonder if I do bravely allow my hand to be attacked by the parents, will this action result in the parents loosing their instinct to ward off intruders? Also, how frequently should I feed the fries? I have thick lush e tenellus lawns, riccia, and java moss on the base and wood, so I hope the fries won't be starved to stunt or even death. I'm hoping to visit c328 later to get the hikari fry powder food as recommended by Ben.
