I accidently break the glass under the MH bulb, just wondering if it needed?

If needed than where can I get a replacement ASAP? I guess it is normal high temper glass but need expertise advice here.

    Million thanks!

I thought that glass is suppose to block UV light from the bulb?

I checked the old post, since like nobody successful get a replacement of the glass once it break.

I look at the glass and it just feel like normal glass, maybe high temper glass ...

I checked Osram 150W MH and it is UV REDUCED, A low-cost toughenedcover plate made from heat resistant glass can be used instead of a UV filter. (info from the PDF)

If i could find the heat resistant glass it might solve my problem. But what happen to those brothers who having this problem? did they stop using MH and throw it aside? since the UV glass is almost impossible to get in any LFS here.

I checked marine forum and couldn't find any helpful info as well.

maybe you can ask delightings, viclite or aquamarin.
since they do MH fixtures, i think they should sell the glass also.

Not too sure leaving MH fixture without protection glass on.

As mentioned before first it may be the UV protection gone missing, strong UV can damage the content of your tank.
Second is safety, blistering hot and wired with high voltage cicruit, you can imagine what an accidental direct spash of water will do while it is on.

i believe its to prevent water splashing onto the blub and causing the blub to break.
then you will have a problem of glass shards in your tank.
best to get a replacement glass.
tempered glass would be best as they dont shatter when broken.

as for UV protection, unless the glass specifically has UV blocking coating i dont think it will block much.
there are specific blubs that have UV block coating.
i have blubs from a brand called "iwasaki" and osram powerstar with the UVS coating.

It's just quartz glass. Certain MH bulbs are shielded (e.g. Astralux) so you don't need the glass for the UV shielding, but still nice to have to prevent accidental splashing of water.
