Shift out the male just to play safe this morning.
Female is out with the school of fries and some begain to venture further to explore the tank
Too tiny to count but seems to be lesser than last night,I also saw 2 dead body near the nanas
This morning I saw a new sights of the female, she take in the tetra bit and bit it into very small bits and spilt it out.The fries immediately crowd around her and feed on the bits.Very touching to see how the female take care of the fries![]()
that is indeed quite interesting behaviour micokthe closest i've seen to that is the female doing the usual gill sifting, and the fry eating the expelled crushed bits from her gills, not her spitting it out

I guess different fish has got different behaviour patterns
Its good to see fellow hobbyist having their apistos spawn for them!!

I am putting the pair back at another tank, female is aggressive now, looks like going to spawn again after 1 week.

Its normal to have death of fries. Only the fittest will survive. Death rate is usually around 20 to 50% or more depending on the species.
Good idea to transfer the male out initially. Thats the first step to ensure higher survival rate of the fries.

Since the female is away, the fries doesnt swim so freely now, hiding at the drift wood with moss most of the time. They only swim to the open when I drop in food, not sure how many left now.

It'll be better to leave the female and the fries together the next time, till the fries are a bit older than remove the female or fries to a grow-out tank...i assume you're feeding bbs?

Feeding decap bbs and live type when I drop by LFS.
I went to Pasir Ris farmway and bought $2 in one big bag but didnt manage to keep most of them alive over night.
Anyone can advice how to keep them in big amount?

Pour them into a container with the water from the bag and aerate using an air pump. Should be ok.
after 24 hours from hatching they'll be kinda worthless as the egg sac would have been used up already.

Perhaps daphnia would be a better alternative. But do wash the daphnia before feeding.

If you have excess bbs, drain off water and freeze them and you still can use them later.

I just tried out a method to keep bbs for a longer time, 2 - 3days
after the bbs are harvested, I will sieve them out and empty them
into a tub with a large surface area, equal portions of salt water and tap water
No aeration is needed....
realised that even when the yolk sak is gone, the bbs still provides fibre and "meat"
for the fries to take and grow
Hope it helps! my 1 cent

fries will probably need more protein in order to grow fasteri've read that brine shrimp after 24 hours are mostly fibre and carbohydrates...lotsa energy, not much growth
![]()

haha lots of energy equals to hyper active fries!
