Advice on wild Apistogramma baenschi "Inka50"

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and new to the hobby. I started about a month and a half back with a pair of A Borellii, a week later got itchy and got a pair of A macmasterii.

Now I'm considering a pair of wild Apistogramma baenschi "Inka50". I just want some advice as to what kind of differences or problems I will face by buying a wild pair of apistos?

This may seem really dumb but what is a F1 fish?

Welcome to AQ! Hope you have enjoyed your stay so far.

For wild Apistogramma, the first problem is getting them to take flakes or pellets. They have never seen them! Second problem is acclimatization. Try asking the shop on their water pH and softness and food they have been feeding the fishes. Helps the fish to get used to your home tank conditions.

Also, in case of illnesses, wilds don't take medication well. Anyway, Apistogramma generally don't take medication well.

As for F1, it is the immediate offspring of a pair of wild parents.

Like what Vincent has pointed out, you'll need to aclimatise them well, giving them water conditions close to their habitat....give them lots of different types of food to see what they eat, the best is to get them to feed on pellets and flakes, try not to give them any frozen or live food first....

Good choice of fish to start off.
Like Vincent said, they don't take well to medication. So good water condition is essential.
Where did you buy your fish from?

Does F1 also refers to subsequent generation? Meaning to say 2nd batch of offspring from wild parents is also called F1.

Yep i believe so. Any offspring from the wild parents will be called F1, not just the first batch you bred. Otherwise it'll be very confusing...what if i bought a wild pair, sold to you after they bred twice...then you sell to Richard after breeding 4 times and Richard breeds them another 6 times...and what if they bred before in the wild also?

If F1 fish are offspring from wild caught fish. Is there such a thing as F2 and so on? What would they signify?

F2 would be the offspring from an F1 pair, the grandchildren of the wild pair basically

i would recommend getting an F1 pair instead of a wild pair if you're interested in starting off and still want something as close to wild as possible. keeping wild fish is definitely harder as they are not used to tank conditions

F1 are the offspring of 2 unrelated fish (not siblings). F1 is also known as 1st filial generation. If the same pair breed a second batch, it will still be F1.
When 2 F1 in-breed their offspring are known as F2 or 2nd filial generation.
The filial generation will carry on only when 2 siblings in-breed.

Aaaarghh... too late! Just contacted the sellers, only 2 pairs left. Self-control went down the drain and I booked a pair.

How much would such a pair cost in sg?

I think many of us also lose self control when it comes to beautiful fish, so enjoy them!
In Singapore the price depends on the quality of the fish, one lfs selling Inka at $60 per pair. What about the pair you ordered, how much does it cost?
Usually people don't in-breed too often, stopping at F2 or F3. If in breeding gets too far, offspring becomes weak, loses it's color or become deform.

I believe a wild Ap Inka will command a higher price than normal ones being sold
I guess you have caught the "apisto bug" the only way to stop it
is when all your tanks are occupied!!

I'll be paying slightly less then S$60 for the pair I reserved.

Both my tanks are full but I'm planning more. The problem is convincing my wife that I need them and of course, finding the space to put them.

Already well hit by the Apisto bug.

In fact I brought a female back to KL from Singapore. To my great dismay, the remaining 2 wild males had died.

So now I have a single female baenschi swimming in my planted tank. I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of the next batch of baenschi
