    Heya guys...

I had bought a pair of Rams from Biotope a few days ago, the guy at the shop said they were a pair.. i tend to think they're both males, though, actually

Anyway, more importantly.. these two guys have been spending every waking moment either stuffing their faces (which is good) or fighting it out with each other (which is bad).

Anyone know if they will fight to the death?

Any suggestions on what i should do?

The tank currently houses the two rams, 3 neons and 3 white clouds (dither fish), 2 false julii cory cats and an otocinclus.

How big is your tank size and does it have place for the looser to hide?

I got 4 rams, 3 male and 1 female. The male was always fight until one of them become winner. It is interesting to see them fighting because it is look llike kishing each other . Then looser will hide on the vegetation all the time and only come out during meal time. The winner will get the female and spawn

Its a 1 foot cube.. there are algae balls and a piece of driftwood with plants on it, that's all. The loser has been hiding around the sponge filter and behind the driftwood. Funny thing is there doesn't seem to be any one loser.. they take turns losing and winning Seems pretty evenly matched.

Rams are safe to keep in small groups? Whew... just don't want them to die on me hehe

The female ram will exhibit redness around the belly area. See if it's the case with your pair. Color will only show after the fishes have settle down.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Oh hmm.. males never ever have pink/red in their bellies??

Ohh then maybe mine are both FEMALE instead of male!!

Sigh. These buggers are proving rather difficult to sex.

Update: THey stopped being so fierce to each other.. instead, they started attacking the dither fish... i came home, switched on the tank light and caught one of them with a neon tetra in its mouth, freshly dead

i quickly removed the other 2 neons. Well, at least the rams themselves seem happy

Hi FishSoup, if you are sure you got both fish of the same sex, you can bring them back to Biotope. The bosses are very friendly, they won't mind changing the fish for you.

Was the neon tetra alive when you "witness" it in the mouth? You mentioned you switched on the light and saw it already in the mouth. It could very well be eating a dead fish, which is entirely not unsusual and many fishes do the same.

Anyway, they normally makes pretty good community fish.

You can find the listing of Biotope on our LFS directory.

Thinking about it, although I can't tell how much exactly more aggressive is the individual in question, you could also have an overly aggressive one based on your description.

That said, our definitions and perceptions of aggressiveness can be totally different, so I think it will be good to do more monitoring on the behaviour first.

Wow, you son choose difficult project . I had 2 failed spawn, the fry did not make it after 3rd days. Now, the couple stop spawning, hopefully it is just a short break

Breed guppy would be much easier

Is Apistogramma cacatuoides easy to breed??

Hmmm.... i have to admit... i'm very tempted to keep either A. cacatuoides or A. agassizi... but thought i'd better get some experience keeping rams and kribensis first

I would highly recommend A. cacatuoides as a beginner dwarf cichlid to try out, especially if you want to try your hand at breeding them. it's the first apisto i started with and in less than a month, i had eggs laid and successfully raised fry from the 2nd spawn just a week later. they're very hardy and not picky about water conditions - they've been known to breed even in alkaline water when the preferred ph for apistos is slightly to very acidic. they're also just about the cheapest apistos available (especially from home breeders) due to their ease of breeding.

    Sounds good

Looks like Ap. cacatuoides is next on the list then.

Once the exams are over and i can find the time to set up a new tank

Ya, i agree that its quite difficult to breed rams. I've got a small 24x24cm tank, my male tend to chase the female around...the female always get bullied.
